I was surprised to find Jesse Ray was in his 20th minor league season with over 8,600 minor league ABs (vs 16 ML ABs). I'm used to minor leaguers retiring long before 40 if they don't get a decent shot in the bigs.

Does this happen frequently or is this a rare occurrence?

If they are on the 40 man roster (as he is) they will never retire.
