My dad's all time favorite player, Eddie Mathews. If anyone is familiar with the Atlanta Crackers, Eddie was a former player for them, one of the best and most popular minor league teams ever, sometimes referred to as the "Minor league Yankees" . My dad lived close by the ballpark (Spiller Field) and would batboy quite a bit for them (in the mid fourties) .
The Crackers played in
Ponce de Leon Park from 1907 until a fire on September 9, 1923, destroyed the all-wood stadium.
[2] Spiller Field (a stadium later also called Ponce de Leon Park), became their home starting in the 1924 season. That new park was unusual because it was constructed around a
magnolia tree that became part of the outfield. Balls landing in the tree remained in play, until
Earl Mann took over the team in 1947 and had the outfield wall moved in about fifty feet.
[4] The Crackers played their last season in the newly built
Atlanta Stadium (later known as Atlanta–Fulton County Stadium).
[1] A few more well known former MLBers also played for the Crackers but I cannot divulge their names in this forum.
My dad would always speak glowingly of his many memories regarding the Crackers. Dad threw righthanded and batted lefty and he had one of the sweetest swings I can remember. Still recall a day back in 72 when the 13-15 year olds played their fathers. Someone made the mistake of putting one in dad's wheelhouse as he hit a ball where I had only seen one 15 year old ever park one at our old senior little league field, 450 feet away. Dad was 40 then. My claim to fame in little league was tying a future MLBer in homeruns one season when I was 12 years old with 5 homers . The other kid however was only 9 years old. He would go on to start at firstbase in the major's for about 6 to 8 years. Cannot mention his name since he has not been chosen in our draft. Well enough reminiscing.
