To be fair, I have to admit that I just found an honest mistake in the numbers.  The numbers should have been:

Player A: 3621 IP, 3.42 ERA, 100 ERA+, 4.48 FIP, 1.191 WHIP, .243 OAV, .299 OBP, .390 SLG, .689 OPS
Player B: 3659 IP, 3.23 ERA, 104 ERA+, 3.91 FIP, 1.287 WHIP, .249 OAV, .317 OBP, .374 SLG, .691 OPS

Ok, no big deal.  Still like B better.
2/29/2012 8:44 PM
God forbid you tell us WHY???
2/29/2012 8:48 PM
I think the lower FIP and higher ERA+ are more important than the WHIP and OAV/OBP.  The FIP because it measures the things the pitcher can control and the ERA+ because it adjusts for league and era, which we don't know and could be significantly different.

But ERA+ is based on ERA which is based on runs which are often produced by hits on balls in play, which is outside of the pitcher's control.  So ERA+ must be disregarded.

And boom goes the dynamite.

The FIP is more important but the ERA+ was the only stat that adjusted for league and era, which gives us a little more context despite the flaws related to BABIP (which exist for OAV/OBP too).

what are your thoughts on left handed second basemen?

Oh yes.  The FIP, which ignores 71% of the outcomes of all plate appearances in baseball.  Why do I keep forgetting it's importance?

Do you think A was better?

Who were the pitchers?
2/29/2012 9:20 PM
It was a hypothetical question for you.  The names of the pitchers are not relevant.  And my opinion is not relevant, though I do have one.

Anyone but me think jrdx is just poking at us?    Or does anyone think he is truly as dumb and baseball illiterate as he appears?
2/29/2012 9:35 PM
Did you ever find those five whip pitchers you were so interested in?

Ok. So what was the point?

Early on in this thread he showed the WIS world that he was massively retarded with respect to his understanding of and application of sabrmetric stats in analyzing players.  I think at some point he may have realized how truly stupid he exposed himself to be and started to poke a bit.  But yeah.  He really is dumb.
