Tech will likely be open. And they are dying to find a good coach. But other schools Auburn and UVA seem like better fits

thanks, that sums up my feelings. I see where urdanick won't be getting UConn. If nobody takes them, and providence opens up, that would be very attractive as there a number of solid recruits in the northeast.
On the other hand, Auburn has a better roster. If I can get them into the NT this year, I'd be rock solid the next year as well. That is probably my first option.

What type of ratings should a player have in order to be an effective man-to-man player?
I've been thinking about a switch to zone... any thoughts?

ampbyu, I'll probably go against the prevailing wisdom--I know mrpolo tends to have awesome defense ratings for man, for one--but at DIII I believe effective man defense can be played by anyone over a 20 or so provided they have decent IQs and good speed & athleticism.
In Rupp, I just dropped Edgewood...they had a top-10 defense and reached the championship game with kids as low as 22 in defense. But, I had kids who could pass (motion offense and all over 20), team speed & athleticism was good, but rebounding was good across the board.
No one rating makes-or-breaks a player (OK, I'd only go single digits in defense for press, and then only for good speed & athleticism + something else). At DIII, I'd try for Ath over 25, speed over 35, good passing, defense over 20, rebounding over 10 (for guards, bigs must be 35+) a starters. Mind you these are for recruits, and with the assumption they will not be counted on in their 1st season, so they have time to develop IQs and such.
If you plan to start them right away, you can target better ratings because with minutes + starts to offer you can land them.
That is my 2 cents for what it is worth. I'll be interested in what others have to say.

I appreciate it... I'm grateful for all the advice I get.

In DIII, I almost tend to not even pay attention to the Def rating. SP and ATH are the only two ratings that I really pay attention to. Not that I dont think Def rating doesnt matter, but if i can find a good offensive player with good SP and ATH, I dont care at all about DEF. Notice Rimmer at Skidmore. I think with good SP and ATH, and Good rebounding from all positions other than PG, most DIII teams can be succesful playing man.
I am from the belief, that on a dIII level, superior offensive talent wins out over defensive talent, so I worry about building teams taht can outscore the other team on a nightly basis.

Hey Amp. I run m2m and I like to think I've had decent success with it. I tend to recruit players with a min. of 25 DEF, but I don't ignore ATH and SPD. If a high DEF player posses low ATH and SPD, especially for their position, pass on them. Vetern coaches will take advantage of that when they gameplan.

Finding more complete players is very difficult and I always have to redshirt a player, but the advantages are great. I like having the rebounding advantage over zone and if I have a "shut-down" DEF player, I don't have to double-team. My basic philosophy (call it the Jeff Van Gundy one) is to have a strong DEF that forces bad shots which creates more rebounds, and if your team is above average at REB than your team will win you a lot of games.

Like someone said, IQs are pretty important. I don't have any statistical data, but I feel that IQs are more important for DIII m2m than DIII zone. Get them to at least a B

OK, here are the details on the coaches voting:
All ballots must be submitted by Friday evening. (I won't actually tally any ballots until late saturday morning so if you get your in before then I'll still count it, but we'll make Friday night the official cut off which should be the CT quaterfinals) Polling is open to all upstate coaches and Sig, our proud 13th member should he decide to join in. Not that I believe anyone here would just vote for their team in an act of homerism, but to avoid any conflicts you may vote for a maximum of 3 players off your own team. Only players playing for teams in the Upstate are eligible to be voted for (sorry sig).
Ballot:
1st team gaurds (SG or PG):
xxxxx (Team)
xxxxx (Team)
1st team post players (C or PF):
xxxxx (Team)
xxxxx (Team)
1st team SF
xxxxx (Team)
2nd team gaurds (PG or SG)
xxxxx (Team)
xxxxx (Team)
2nd team posts (C or PF)
xxxxx (Team)
xxxxx (Team)
2nd team wildcard (any spot for those teams that don't play a SF much)
xxxxx (Team)
Again, only 3 players at most may come off your own team when voting (it they're worthy other coaches will vote for them as well). I wasn't sure how to handle the teams that run a 3 post lineup or a 3 gaurd lineup, so I added the 2nd team wild card spot that can be filled w/ any position (including SF). Who you vote for is up to you. Best players on the best teams? Player that scores the most at his spot? A particular player that trashed you defense twice this year? PG that set up his teammates for easy baskets and played solid D while scoring little? 4 SGs that light up the competition like a christmas tree? Anything goes, and any explanations of your picks would be helpful as I'll try to include some form of write up.
I also plan to include a couple of other catagories for voting. You may not vote for yourself or one of your players in any of the following catagories:
Coach of the year
Player of the year
6th man of the year (must start less than 10 games all season and play less than 25 mpg)
Frosh of the year.
If anyone has additional ideas or would like to tweak this a little bit, please speak up. To make sure things are on the up & up, I'll site mail my selections to polo either tomorrow or wednesday depending on the weather here and how much time the snow/ice takes away from me.

good work, but looking at my initial list and your list, I don't see Sanford (Washington) listed. The other 3 gaurds getting one of my votes (at the moment) are listed.
2/12/2007 3:37 PM
regarding Rimmer and the SF slot. Anyone have any suggestions for this spot? Should we just vote for a top 5 regardless of position? I thought it was an easy question regarding the SF spot as there is 1 SF that should be on everyone's ballot (at least in my opinion). It might not be so easy down the road though.

sorry taz. had sanford and rimmer down as my two no-brainers. forgot to put em on the list...

Not that I want to influence voting, but they were on my 1st team as well. I'm almost done w/ mine, I'll sitemail it to ya this afternoon. I've got to figure out my 6th man and my frosh of the year.
