Let me put it this way...I've made no secret about the fact that I think pitcher W/L record is a useless, piece of **** stat that should be forgotten.

If you were arguing that a pitcher belonged in the hall and I came at you with an argument that his W/L record sucked, that'd be about as dumb an argument as I could ever make. I don't think the stat is useful, why am I using it?

So, back to EM, I'm happy to make an argument that involves WAR, but not until you agree that WAR is a useful stat. Because, otherwise, when I make the argument, you're going to respond with, "yeah, well, that's why WAR is useless."

And we're back to square one.

So let me know. If it's useful, great, we can address your top 10 question. If it's not, oh well, we can use something else.
Hey look...we're back to square one.
Yep. EM is out and you can't prove why he should be in.

It’s kinda the point of the entire argument, right? He deserves to be in but the Hall of Fame isn’t an objectively provable thing. There isn’t a hard standard.

Martinez is probably a top 40 or 50 hitter of all time. That’s plenty good enough to be in, even playing DH.

I'm not sure of the point of the argument. I just know I'm right and it's proven year after year when he doesn't get in.

Clarity for me, are we arguing that he should be in the hall or will be in the hall?
Just e-mail me a response.

The answer is "yes". Internet arguments don't have a lot of structure. Especially when BL is involved.

Are sportswriters really "authority"?

I'm loud at a bar. 3 sportswriters say "Hey, bud, tone it down". I give them the finger.

Once again, you prove yourself to be so lacking in self awareness that you can't tell when you are being made fun of.

Nope. All I see is EM in the top 10 of WAR one time in 7 years. I don't call that "fantastic" at all. If you're not gonna bring a glove, you better hit like a beast. 1 time, 7 years, top 10 is not beastly.
“If you’re not gonna bring a glove, you better hit like a beast”

*Uses stat that involves defense while ignoring the offense only stats*

Sometimes I see something you write and I say to myself, well he’s clearly ******* around. He doesn’t mean this.

Then I remember that you argued Edgar Martinez walked too much.

No one thinks sportswriters are legal authorities. But they control who gets into the Hall. In this context, they are an authority.

As tec can now tell you, it’s a logical fallacy to appeal to authority.

Youre welcome tec.

I wonder if Mike and BL realize how truly in love with each other they are. They're like a pair of second graders on the playground antagonizing each other because they don't know how to express their true feelings.

I am curious. Does everyone agree that David Ortiz should be in the HoF?

Y or N?

In terms of WAR:

From his age-27 season onward, Martinez created more value (67.6 WAR) than all but 20 position players, 19 of whom are in Cooperstown; (Barry) Bonds is the lone exception. Of the top 35 on that list, only A-Rod (Alex Rodriquez), Bonds, Chipper Jones, Pete Rose and the still-active Adrian Beltre and Ichiro Suzuki aren’t already enshrined.

I hate Ortiz, but he's got great numbers.

I think he and Edgar should be paired together. Keep both out or put both in. I don't see how you can induct one and not the other, especially if you're using the DH argument against the one you don't induct.
