OK, I for one would like all Elites to go-away, however what we have is what we have.  However, how about updating the current listing - specifically:

Removal of:

Penn State --- self-explanatory, especially in light of the recent independent report.  We wouldn't glorify other types of programs built on the ignoring the inexcusable (oh that German Army/Industry in the 40's was one of the best...)

Tennessee --- still trying to figure out how they made it in the first place

Based on this rational and that going in the other thread GD should just give Penn State the death penalty. Forget about elite status.

Based on the same rational every American of German, Italian and Japanese decent should be persecuted too.

Those people should be persecuted. And start with my neighbor, Giuseppe Von Yoshida.  Every day, same thing.  Tanning and then hanging out on the porch with his wiseguy friends wearing their Hello Kitty backpacks and blaring polka music.

I wish we didn't have elites at all.  This is GD dynasty where you build your own program.  A small group of people shouldn't get a built in advantage just because they were lucky enough to time things right and grab a certain school when it became available.

All DI schools should be on equal footing whether they are current BCS schools or come from conference USA.  1AA, DII and DIII don't have elites and those divisions work fine.  Northwest MIssouri State and Pittsburg State "two DII elites by anyones definition" can be good or terrible depending on the coach.  Same should hold true to Alabama, Notre Dame and USC, imo.  I think it would make the game better if UAB had just as much of a shot at a Natty as Ohio State does.

I know many will disagree and that's fine, I respect your opinions and your right to them, these are just my thoughts.

Yeah if any elite needs to be removed, its Notre Dame. They haven't been relevant since the 80's and never will be until they lower recruiting standards and join a conference.

Yeah Tennessee deservED to be on the list, but not anymore.

And Michigan deserves a good long look as well.

That's a little much. While there are great traditions there, would you consider Army to be elite? I think they should be if Michigan remains.

They are a storied program, but the last few years no longer make them elite.
In the case of Army its far more than a few years.

Michigan had 3 or 4 mediocre years. Army has been a joke for 45 years or more.

Michigans's worst years would have been deemed a success at Army.
I used Army as an example to kind of exaggerate my point. But that last sentence hurt.

I stand by the fact that I do not believe Michigan is truly worthy of elite status anymore. And Tennessee and Notre Dame are no brainers.

I agree about Tennessee, but Michigan and ND still have that extra recruiting edge even though they've been losing for a while. Tennessee's become a recruiting joke.

you have to take into account history when factoring in elite status but also factoring current and most recent success.

if you argue the past then Army,Navy,Minnesota,Georgia,Pittsburgh should be elite.
if you argue current then Va Tech,Boise St,WVU,Oregon,Okie St and Stanford should be.

if you factor combine those elements then the current crop is about right.

Casesari the only legit arguments to be made to drop teams from elite status would be ND, & Tennessee. Michigan had one of the longest bowl game streaks & winning season streaks in college football history. until Tressel took over at OSU they effectively owned the B1G every season since 97'. they were in NC game contention in almost every season since 97' as well.

before Saban came in Alabama had a far worse resume than Michigan to remain as an elite team.

If you're going on natty's in the last 25 years, it would be Michigan, Ohio St., Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, LSU, USC, Miami, & FSU.

My felings are that elite=a national following irregardless of recent history, now you look at a former elite school like UCLA that hasn't been relevant for decades then yes I would agree dropping them but nobody is there yet.
Notre Dame?
Based on wins and losses yes but the fact remains that they have a built in pipline with a number of Catholic High school kids still dreaming about playing at ND,  now if that pipline is weak is definitely open for question but kids will still visit and try to get in if they can qualify. If the point is realism in todays landscape then leave ND as an elit but they can only sign recruits with 3.7 GA and above...lol.

I've always wondered what would happen if they could reject kids in GD based on GPA. Duke and Stanford would have a tough time being any good.

VaTech, WISCO, AND WVU have had the type of success the last 2 decades to warrant elite type status.  Tenn did have a great run in the late 90s along with FSU,  even though ND has been very average the last 18 yrs (?) since lou holtz,  they are an icon and i still hate them for that.

if only Iowa coulda beat the teams thye are supposed to (jNW, ISU, Minny, Indidna)  we could be lookin at iowa as 8/10 years in a BCS bowl or New Years day bowl.  i coulda then put the hawks up there and not got completely laughed out of the converation :-(

notre dame is still elite.  despite their recent issues they still bring in top talent and recover with a top flight new head coach.  similar to ohio state, michigan, usc recently.  it seems like with a stadium over 100k fans you'll always be an elite.

Agreed. Especially on the Northwestern part.... why can the Hawks never beat them?!?!
