Fair enough. Here's why you're an idiot:
When you hit a ball, a lot of factors come into play. You can absolutely crush it but hit it right at someone. You could hit some **** blooper and it falls in. You could hit it to Dr. Badread and he screws it up. I could go on but you get the point.
When a ball is hit in your area, nothing but you and the ball matters. In your prime, there really should be no way you can have one of the best seasons ever and then be below league average the next.
Think of fielding like a probability. Some balls hit to Trout are 100% balls. He catches those every time. Others are, for example, 75% balls and 50% balls and 25% balls.
In a good year he catches almost all of the 75%ers, most of the 50%ers, and a good chunk of the low probability balls.
In a worse year, he catches less of each category and therefore does less to prevent run scoring.
It’s pretty simple.
