I think early in his career, with the Dodgers, Piazza really was a fine defensive catcher.  And then with the Mets they almost always had high-priced free agent 1B (Olerud, Vaughn, etc.) who they had to play.  Maybe Piazza would have been best-served at 1B.  But that's really more of a team decision than his decision.
Not everyone can play first. He was pretty bad at it. He was best served at catcher for the vast majority of his career.

You guys make good arguments and Piazza probably could have put up better numbers as a 1B. But it seems funky to give a guy bonus points for playing a position he wasn't very good at. If he would have better offensively as a 1B, maybe that's what he should have done.
Except that he could play catcher. Not everyone can. That has value in itself.
