Tell the Yankees Rivera was a secondary player. Tell the 2016 Orioles that Britton was just a secondary player.

The best RPs are difference makers for their teams.
If you want to argue that 80 high leverage innings from a reliever are just as valuable as 220 innings from a starter, I'd probably agree.

But most innings from closers aren't terribly high leverage.

We're not talking about the average closer. We're talking about the best in history. I'm pretty sure playing in NY, especially in the playoffs, Rivera had plenty of high leverage innings.

Hoffman, maybe not so much, but his career body of work is deserving of the HOF.

In terms of regular season, Hoffman actually had a higher average leverage index than Rivera.

Anyone who doesn't think Hoffman or Edgar should be in needs a brain scan
I voted no on Hoffman. I think he's borderline. I'd put Wagner in ahead of him and I voted no on Wagner.

I'd probably vote no on all relief pitchers. At least, I wouldn't vote any RP ahead of someone like Mussina or Schilling.
So you won't be voting for Rivera?

And this isn't an official ballot. We don't have a limited number of votes in this thread, so whether or not you'd vote him in ahead of someone else is irrelevant.
Eh, I'd probably vote for Rivera but if it came down to him or Mussina (for example) I'd vote Mussina.

Obviously we aren't limited to ten spots but, as good as Rivera was, he was still just a reliever.
A late entrant for "Most Retarded Post of 2016".
I think it's a winner not an entrant.

If you had to choose between Mike Mussina and Mariano Rivera for the Hall of Fame, and you would take Mussina over Rivera, you would be:
Votes: 11
(Last vote received: 1/5/2017 10:43 PM)

Easiest poll evah!

Choosing Moose over Rivera isn't retarded. Saying Rivera shouldn't be in because he's "still just a reliever" is.

"This"

in other news I read this - Yankees Derek Jeter never failed to reach base in more than three consecutive games during his 2,905 combined regular and postseason games.

Pretty amazing. BL loves to tear down Jeter.

I don't really know what the forum bullies think about Pedro, but I do find it ironic that some of the same guys - mostly Yankees fans - who tried to make a case against Pedro Martinez on the basis of not having pitched enough innings are about this dismissive of anti-Mariano arguments.

I'm not necessarily anti-Rivera, but if I'm making a list of the top 30 pitchers of all time, he's not on it. Mussina is.

As a Yankee fan, I don't make a case against Pedro because of IP. I just think he needs an assbeating for throwing Zim to the ground. One day, I hope to see him walking down the street. I'll issue said assbeating. Then probably spend the rest of my life in jail but it will be with a smile on my face.

Top 30 of all time? I'm a Moose fan, but we're probably talking Top 50ish.

That said, I think both he and Rivera should be in. You keep acting like it's one or the other. There's room for both.

Alright, WHICH ONE OF YOU ***** VOTED NO FOR MATT ******* STAIRS!!!

Matt Stairs gets no respect.

Top 30? God what a ridiculous comment. Ridiculous.
