I would consider Jeter a good shortstop. Not great defensively, but good enough.

I think Jeter gets a bad rap as a SS. He wasn't Ozzie, but I've seen plenty worse.
He got a bad rap because he wasn't good defensively.

Overall, he was still great, though. Just not as good as Arod.

(But Arod's also probably the best or second best SS of all time, so that's a tough standard to hold anyone to)

It depends what you mean by "defensively". He was pretty good with the glove and usually handled what he got to - and that's what I'm sure a lot of people remember. It's his range that was the problem. No one remembers all the basehits that a SS with even average range would have gotten to.

So he was just a singles hitting Jhonny Peralta

How many of those do you think there were per game?

I have no idea. But I can guarantee he had more than most shortstops.

Just guess. 1 per game? 2? 3? 27?

Between 10 and 60 additional hits per season, depending on the season.

For comparison, Arod took away about 17 hits more than an average shortstop his last year in Texas.

Being generous to Jeter and assuming that Arod would lose a little the next year in NY, you're still looking at a net loss of ~20 hits.

where did you come up with those numbers?

Certainly not from watching the games. He has stats.

Super rough estimates. Run value of a single varies between .4 and .5 depending on the year. Used BR's Rfield (runs better or worse than average) and backed into it.

I could be off but it's probably closer than any other estimate.

Well, no.

But if you have a better way of answering mike's question, I'm all ears.

He basically is saying Jeter was useless outside of being a good bat for a SS.
