Welcome to the first installment of that All Upstat coaches secletion show. We had 10 of 13 coaches participate, a fine sampling, but still a little shy of our 13/13 goal. So w/o further ado, here you go:
Our second team selections:
Posts
Chris McBurnett (Washington, SR) - 14.4 ppg, 9.7 RB, 0.9 Blks
Dean Petrick (H&WS, SR) - 15.8 ppg, 9.0 RB, 1.8 Blks
The Swing man:
Michael Brewton (Case Westeron, SR) - 16.6 pts, 3.0 RB, 2.9 Asts
Gaurds:
Victor Bowman (NYU, JR) - 10.4 ppg, 4.9 ast, 81.0% ft
(3 way tie) Adam Corvin (Chicago, SR), Pat Dick (H&WS, JR) & W Goodman (Hamilton, SR)
Now to our first team seletcions:
At Gaurd,
Louis Rimmer (Skidmore, SR) A 4 year starter has paced he way towards the division lead and Skidmore's first postseason birth during his tenure. He averaged 14.9 ppg, 3.6 RBs, & 2.7 Asts stuffing the stat sheet and reaching double figures in every game but 4.
Rich Sanford (Washington, SR) Also a 4 year starter and a near unanimous 1st team selection Sanford has really taken off since a late season coaching change. A memorable 20 point, 7 assist including the game winning shot with 5 seconds remaining has propelled Washington to the conference finals. For the season Sanford has averaged 13.4 pts, 5.8 ast & 1.0 stls
At SF,
Harley Robinson (St Lawerence, JR) This redshirt Junior was a unanimous selection for the 1st team spot. Despite being the main focus of opposing defenses every night, Robinson managed to score a lead leaguing 19.6 ppg, 5.5 Rbs while knocking down an eye popping 111 3 pointers. Robinson will now be counted on to lead the way towards a PI championship while looking forward to what should be an all american senior campaign
In the Post:
Lei Chu (Skidmore, SR) What Rimmer is to the perimeter, Chu is to the interior of Skidmore's tough balance team. A 4 year starter, Chu increased his produciton across the board averaging 15.3 ppg, 9.3 rbs & 1.4 Blcks. A consistent performer, Chu managed to pull in a double double in roughly half of Skidmore's games despite averaging only 23 mpg.
Ben Coomer (Chicago, SR) This redshirt senior was is a consistant starter for the last 3 seasons leading the way in switching from a swiss cheese zone defense to a tough man2man. The defending Defensive player of the year in conference play, Coomer lead the way for Chicago scoring a team leading 17.1 ppg, a lead leaguing 10.1 RBs while knocking down over 56% of his shots and 85% of his free throws.
Freshman of the year:
A tight race ended with Case Western's Stanley Scarlett being named the FOY. An impressive 11 point, 9 rebound debut got the fans in Cleveland excited about his future potential. Starting in 21 of Case's 28 team games, Scarlett put up 6.2 points & 6.6 rebounds a night. On a youthful squad, Scarlett is expected to led a resurgance in Case Western Hoops.
Falling 1 vote shy, Thomas Segal (St. Lawerance) lead all frosh in individual scoring. He will be counted on to replace the immense production that Harley Robinson takes w/ him upon graduation in 2 seasons
6th man of the year:
Leading the depth charge at RPI was senior center Josh Gravois. His 12.2 pts & 7.6 boards garnered him as the top 6th man in conference play. A very consistant performer off the bench the last 2 seasons for this former Juco All Star. Rumors abound that he has landed a prestigious internship at a big 5 accounting firm this summer. Look for this man to be the next great CEO.
POY:
A surprise computer selection for POY, and an overwhelming human selection, this year's POY is Ben Coomer out of Chicago. Being used in a multitude of roles, Coomer excelled in all of them. From primary scorer to defensive stopper and the occasional depth charge off the bench, Coomer filled up the stat sheets and is hoping for a deep run in the NT tournament. An incredible 16 game double-double performer, Coomer credits much of his success to coach Stevie Scott who had the insight to recruit this kid 5 seasons back while Coach taz21 was sipping coronas alongside the in pool bar on his honeymoon.
Finally, COY:
A tight 3 man race w/ only 1 vote seperating the winner from the 2 coaches tied for 2nd. With all 3 coaches guiding their teams towards an NT bid. So w/o further ado, I present to you the COY, a man who knew just the right questions to ask the magic 8 ball throughout the season as well as the computer selection for COY. Congrats to coach Taz21 for winning this first annual coaches selection as their Coach of the Year.
Coach Polo & Coach liquid draino fell just behind coach Taz garnering 3 votes a piece while Taz picked up 1 more vote, bringing home the trophy.
Good luck to all coaches in postseason play, this has been a banner year for Upstate hoops and hopefully a sign of things to come.
