There is a report that Beckett (shoulder) played golf last Thursday, one day after it was announced he would miss a scheduled start Saturday, the Boston Globe reports. Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said he hasn't had a chance to talk to Beckett about the report, while general manager Ben Cherington said he doesn't think Beckett "would have done something to further injure himself." Beckett had his start skipped due to a strained latissimus muscle behind his right shoulder.

I know this, because that's what Josh Beckett said when interviewed after getting shelled last night.

Bobby V. takes control of the situation by agreeing that Josh Beckett can do whatever the hell Josh Beckett wants to do on an off day.

Yeah, I heard that interview(at least a snippet) this morning.    Is he the most unlikeable player in baseball right now?

Of course, he does have a point.

"We get 18 off days a year," he said. "I think we deserve a little bit of time to ourselves."


But I think his calendar works a little differently than mine.   Mine has November, December, January and 1-15 in February on it.   It also has no games scheduled for the Sux in October.

I thought that the general consensus was that Bobby V. was brought in to shake things up after what was perceived as complacency on the part of the Francona managment team in the wake of last season's meltdown.

Yet here is the perfect opportunity for Valentine to make an example of one of last season's problem children, and he gives Beckett a free pass.

This is even more fun that I expected!

I think Bobby V is just happy that Sux Nation is booing someone else.   Additionally, ripping Beckett would diminish his trade value.  If other teams know the Sux can't wait to be rid of Beckett, they get him at a discount.
