Will this team win me my 1st Championship Topic

Going for a little different approach. I finally "sold out" and joined the Astrodome. This team is different than all of my previous ones because I built it to try and be able to win in the playoffs. Here it is. $80 mil open league of course.

Lineup:

1 - '99 Vizquel ($5.68)

2 - '87 Coleman ($4.08)

3 - '00 Castillo ($5.18)

4 - '93 Jefferies ($5.97)

5 - '90 McGee ($4.87)

6 - '83 Henderson ($5.44)

7 - '07 Figgins ($3.88)

8 - '05 Molina ($2.56)

Rotation:

1 - '86 Mike Scott ($13.24)

2 - '01 Jamie Moyer ($6.02)

3 - '07 James Shields ($6.08)

4 - '01 Mark Buehrle ($6.78)

Bullpen:

'24 Babe Adams ($1.74)

'21 Red Shea ($990k)

'06 Greg Maddux ($1.97)

'06 Brandon League ($1.34)

'80 Andy Rincon ($1.13)

'04 Highball Wilson ($200k)

'88 Bob Milaki ($1.52)

2 AAA pitchers

-------------------------------------

My plan is to use Milaki during the regular season only when I absolutley need him. So if this team does make it to the playoffs I am going to get a start or maybe even 2 out of him. I am thinking Mike Scott will be awesome to throw 2x in a 5 game series or 3x in a 7 game. And the other games I will ride the hot hand between Buehrle/Shields/Moyer. One or two of them could join the pen during the playoffs and it would be a very solid bullpen. The lineup seems on paper decent enough. What do you guys think do I have a chance?

Looks good. Good chance to make the playoffs but if you run into a HR heavy team in the playoffs those starters might give up alot of HR.

This is unnecessary.

I'm pretty sure that some time ago admin correctly closed a loophole that allowed people to "save" innings for the playoffs. So even if you NEVER used Milaki during the regular season, he will get automatically reset to 95% of rl when the playoffs begin.

As long as he is still at 100% at season's end, you will be in the same boat pitching him 25 innings or zero.

I don't use him a bunch, but when I do I prefer to save him for the later rounds of the playoffs, unless I am facing elimination.
Many times an owner starts him in game one of round one and then he's pretty much shot until the LCS...

Better pitching available than Scott for that price tag.

You could replace Scott w/ a pitcher under $10M that can give you 40 plus quality starts. Look for low BB/9, perhaps a '02 Tannehill. You could get a better 2nd/3rd starter with the savings. A good 4th starter is '28 Pennock, especially in that park. The bullpen is a bit thin, but you might get lucky w/AAA...1,250IP recommended, otherwise you'll likely run into fatigue issues...

bullpen is very thin, i have always found that going cheap in the bullpen isnt worth it. a favorite of mine is Pape and maneti for under two mil or miljus is a good 80 RL IP for 2.3-6ish

the thing is, Moyer/Buehrle/Shields are always amazing for me. Each cost just over $6 mil and they perform like Cy Young winners. Year in and out they have ERA's somewhere from 3.50-4.00 with WHIP's from 1.20-1.35. Win 15-20 games a season. One current league Shields is 2nd in the Cy Young voting behind a $14 million dollar pitcher. I want one shut down pitcher who will give me a 90% chance to win his starts in the playoffs. Really I am setting the team up for the playoffs. Looking at Mike Scotts performance history, his worst season is a 3.16 ERA for close to 300 innings. Average season ERA well under 3.

If I did replace him for a guy around $10 mil could I get somebody close to as good as Scott is? And then should I use the extra $ on the pen? I want to keep my 2-4 starters as is.

Dump Scott and Buerhle and pick up '99 Pedro Martinez and '02 Derek Lowe. Take the ~1.75 million you saved and upgrade in the pen.

Take at least another 2 $200K scrubs.

I also like the Martinez & Lowe idea.

I like the '05 Pedro, stats aren't much worse than '99 and costs alot less.
8/1/2009 11:42 PM
so is the conscience a duo of Pedro and Lowe over Scott and Buehrle?

If you like Moyer, Shields and Buehrle I say go for it..
