Cliff Lee's Historic Season Topic

Dunno if anybody else has noticed this.  I just noticed it almost by accident.  Cliff Lee's current K/BB is 15.22.  This would be the 4th highest number in the database, behind only a 27-IP pitcher and 2 seasons of the Eck.

9 walks in 160 innings. That's incredible!

Even more unbelievably, Lee has gotten LESS run support from the Rangers than he did with the Mariners!

9 walks in 160 innings, so in the sim we can expect about 35 walks in 160 innings.

What's Roy Halladay's ERA again?
Halladay's ERA has nothing to do with Lee's, the point is that the Phillies HAD and should have kept both pitchers. Now if you were smart about it you would have said imagine Halladay and Lee's ERA side by side at the top of the rotation with Hamels pitching 3rd in the rotation. Amaro traded Lee because he declined a contract extension and cited the fact that he had to restock the farm system using Lee. Well he got 3 prospects who all suck as of right now, 1 was demoted from AA back to A ball and another was just busted for cocaine poss, nice deal Ruben. On top of that, he went out and traded for Oswalt, further depleting the farm and coming up with a pitcher who is very good but not as good as Lee. The only benefit to Oswalt over Lee is the Phils control him for '11 and possibly '12 if they chose. If they would have kept Lee they would have had a better chance of winning in '10 and would have received 2 1st rd sandwich picks to replenish the farm instead of the 3 scrubs they got in return through a hastily rushed trade. Sorry for the rant not directed at you unless you are RUben Amaro, and if that's the case then eff you!

Why?  The Phils then would have been "screwed" after this year when Lee walked.  They'd still have Halladay, but that's it.  So they give up Lee, get Halladay and restock their farm system.  Very shrewd move, especially since they should grab a WC and if their offense finally gets their act together, maybe even make a run at another WS.  They didn't need Lee this year...they needed what the got for the future though.

WC?, heck, I think they're going to over take the Braves and win the division. Am I'm not anything other than a casual observer of the Phillies; certainly no fan of theirs.

I don't thinking keeping both Lee and Halladay was ever an option because of owner-imposed salary limitations.  They were trying to keep it under $140 million and wouldn't have been close while paying both of those guys along with the other players they already had.

On 12/17, the Phillies traded Lee to the Mariners, receiving Halliday in the exchange. The Phillies never had booth of them at the same time. The Phils knew they were not going to get into a bidding war with the Yankees for Lee's services, so they did the next best thing, getting value for him. I'm not a Phillies fan, but they did well.
