4.7 and top 93% of SATs? Forget Ivy schools?

yeah I don’t buy it

just like I don’t buy households making $400k are middle class
That was the quote from her guidance councilor. What aren't you buying and $400k is middle class in Brookline MA. Look at the price of Real Estate...if you don't make at least that you cannot afford a home here.

Now my daughter is only a junior but she now has to temper her expectations.
If you live somewhere that $400K is middle class, maybe you're not the best person to try to relate to what the 98% of the Country where about 15% of that amount is middle class needs.
Maybe. I am just sharing my experiences.

I can appreciate that, just try to think of how relative it is to the overall picture.
I do believe the Ivy League comment though, as I know a friend's son was told similar a few years ago.

We live in MA. Our families are here and MA is super pricey. Cost of doing business...but we are definitely middle class. My wife went back to work just this year after 16 yrs of raising our kids. Note: While $400k may seem high compared to the cost of living here it is not as high as you think. Not as bad as NYC or San Fran but its up there.

I live close to SF, and we don't make anywhere close to $400K a year. (Esceacially since my wife has not worked since the pandemic began) I would consider myself middle class. At the very least 400K would make you upper middle class.

I disagree. Not sure what you paid for your house but my monthly bills sit at $7k and that is before we eat anything. Pricey!

Property especially. SF is SUPER PRICEY. I am guessing you live far enough away.

I live in Sonoma County about 45 minutes north of SF. That is wine country..and it is very expensive to live here. When we bought our house 22 years ago, we paid about 1/3rd of what it is worth now. If we were buying now, I doubt we'd be able to afford to buy anything where we live.

Bingo...you benefitted smartly from the RE market. I was not as fortunate as we bought the house in 2005 and have had to make many upgrades since. My guess is you have a HELOC at a very low rate that helps subsidize some of the expenses.

Nope, no HELOC. We've renovated a bathroom and a full remodel on the kitchen.  3 kids, all college age and all eat like you wouldn't believe.  We have no car payments and other than the mortgage, no real debt. We just worked out butts off and spent wisely to bet to this point.

I don’t give a damn where you live. If you’re bringing in 400k a year you have NO IDEA of what “middle class” is. Absolutely NO CLUE. You SERIOUSLY need to check your privilege.

I will give him credit where credit is due. This is the first thing I’ve seen from him in quite a while that I wholeheartedly agree with.
