Everyone needs to keep in mind that none of us know what we are talking about here because the DEF ratings are not what effect sim outcomes.

They are used to represent the stop%s in some vague way that has never been clearly spelled out.

So we dont know what a DEF rating of 100 or 60 or 5 really means. It is clear that the DEF rating scale is skewed and has little relation to a normal distrubution which only adds to the dificulty of interpreting it. But not knowing the actual stop %s it is hard to give any comment other than that the ratings would make much more sense and could be better interpreted were they on a normal scale.

well but that is the real problem and the fact that so many different levels of 'skill' can be expressed as a 100 rating just renders the rating meaningless - if they are supposed to be expressing some relation to stop% (and I know that's what they said) why cant they be calibrated to more clearly show differentiation?

IMHO 95-100 Def ratings should be given out for season in which guys were stand out top notch best of the best defenders, like Rodman in 91-92, Payton in his prime seasons, MJ when he was on top of his game defensively, Wilt, Russell etc etc. Kobe does not deserve a 100 rating when he takes long stretches off from playing top notch def, LBJ does not deserve a 100 rating for this past season. 100 was handed out like candy, and even 90-100 was given out to players who dont deserve it, Samuel Dalembert gets a 92 this past season but McHales highest season ever was a 90??? What a joke, I watched 50-60 of the 76ers games this year and Dalembert could only wish he was as close to as good of a defender as McHale was, Sammy blocks 3+ shots per game so he gets a 92 huh? Apparently man to man d doesnt count, but some weak side blocks do.

This describes my model quite well. Even getting a 90 is a challenge, higher than 95 as you mentioned, are reserved for the best of the best. And players like LeBron or Dalembert are nowhere near those numbers.
