Andray Blatche has a defensive of rating of 87 from the season of 07-08. This seems ridiculous to me.

It is a tie between that and the 96 rating for Troy Murphy....Troy Murphy is the defensive equal to Rodman, Olajuwon, Pippen, Kidd, and Robinson.  He is superior to Bill Russell.  Someone must be a Notre Dame fan.  This really bothers me.

WHAT? That is perposterous.

Part of the reason Troy has a high defensive rating is because of his high DReb%.  WIS uses that as one of the factors for defensive rating.

In the past they also looked at awards as well...TMurph has never been on an All-Def team...not once.  It is amazing to me that he gets put on par with the greatest defenders ever.

IMO a defensive rating has little to do with the ability to get defensive rebounds. But what is the best way to gauge defensive ability just by using stats? Some players gamble all of the time to try and get steals. They get extra steals, a few times per game, which raises their defensive ratings. However, when they don't steal the ball they leave their man open to either take a good shot or to penetrate to the basket for a lay in for themselves or a team mate.

I don't have a problem with defensive rebounds being part of def rating since defense is about limiting possessions (especially quality possessions) and a rebound is a certain way to end a possession, but other things need to be looked at as well.  Which has me thinking:

I would find it interesting to add in rating numbers for clutch, leadership, quickness, speed, and hustle.  Imagine those numbers for people like Rodman, Bird, Jordan, Olajuwon, Russell, Rondo, West, and others.  It would be difficult to do, but it would be worth the effort.  Think of the value added to a guy like Iverson that seldom gets used in the sim because the sim does a poor job of capturing how devestating his crossover was and how he could blow by someone.  The same with DWade, Clyde Frazier, Tim Hardaway, and Isiah.

Think about how those would effect defense.  Rodman's hustle.  Bird's clutch, quickness, and hustle.  Rondo's speed.  Magic's clutch, leadership, and quickness (which is so underrated...Magic wasn't the fastest guy, but he would be on people and then by them before they knew what happened).  Jordan's everything.  One of the most frustrating things in the sim is that it fails to capture the true characterstics of the gods of basketball.  How many of us have seen a last second shot taken by Wilt or Russell when MJ, Bird, West, and/or Magic is on the team?  Think about how cool it would be if you could say "Down by 1-8 points or up 0-4 points with 1 minute left I want the offense to maximize opportunities for X Player."  On defense you could say "Down 1-8 points or up 0-4 points with 1 minute left I want to assign X player as a stopper to guard key clutch player".

Just some random thoughts.

defensive rating is used to lower fg% in this sim.
defensive rebounding has nothing to do with lowering fg%... in fact, to put yourself in position to get a rebound, you are actually lowering your ability to defend the shot.
furthermore, since defensive rebounding percentage is used purely for rebounding and defensive rating is used purely for effecting fg% by opponent, the two should NOT be mixed in any way.

Seble has already said he thinks the formula should be changed but flat admitted that it wasn't important enough to be bothered with when he gave us this farce of a salary structure.
