I have never gone into a season thinking or trying to win the world series. Unless I took over an abandoned team after the season started then my expectations are curbed.

You should play to win every game because it affects the playoff race for everybody else. If teams played all out against some competing for a playoff spot and then tanked against others, it undermines the integrity of the competition.
