Best all around SS Topic

Can't believe I'm going to ask this. I probably just want to see MikeT argue with more people.

Has anyone ever seen a 'near perfect' all around SS? In my experience you get defensive studs who couldn't hit a beach ball, or you get guys who swing a hot stick but have defensive ratings 70-75 that for some reason people think are acceptable for SS. Anyone out there that has won a gold glove and silver slugger for SS in the same year? Or should have?

Found one in Doubleday, Hisanori Brea in season 23

I wouldn't really call a .247 hitter an offensive stud. He had some power, but not much else.

He fits hockey's parameters of Gold Glove and Silver Slugger for a SS in the same season.

Keep in mind that Silver Slugger is going to be relative to other players in the position. If all the shortstops in the league suck as hitters, one of them is still going to win a SS for being the least smelly turd in the outhouse.

Phil Chong also won a SS and GG as a shortstop in S28 in Mantle.

True. Missed that.

Miguel Morales has the potential to do it.

This guy was just put in the MG HOF. S29 he had more + plays than errors and won the SS. Probably didn't win GG because some .203 hitter won it.

Hypothetically speaking, here. I reviewed SS ratings in my two worlds. On average, good SS hitters with fielding ratings better suited to 3B, that combination of ratings generally gives you a player with an 85-ish Overall. An 80-ish Overall with very good fielding ratings is generally a .240 - .260 hitter.

90+ Overalls are rare enough. I'd have to think an HBD equivalent to, say, the young A-Rod, would be about a 98 Overall.

I was thinking that. You never see a SS with 80's in the major hitting categories. Maybe power and eye. But never contact, VsL and VsR. Agreed with damag. Would probably be the closest to a 100 OVR player we would see.

Wascar got the GG and SS on my Atlanta team last year at 23 y/o. Should be able to do it multiple years unless someone plays a 3B at SS. Was also runner up for MVP the year prior.

Best defensive SS in the league by ratings - 91/93/97/88 (should get another point or two in each category). Has 42 plus plays to 30 errors so far. Manages an 800 OPS against righties with a 25 vRHP. Like hockey mentioned, his power and eye (along with his switch hitting) are what save his bat.

Closest player to a real life Tulo that I've seen in my limited HBD experience.

Player Profile: Carlos Ordonez - Hardball Dynasty Baseball | WhatIfSports is the best all-around SS I've had on a team of mine. SS + GG in Season 37 (.790 OPS, but career he's under .700). Same world as Greg Wood, above, but Wood was better.

Heck of a player. I've always wondered this, how can a guy have a range of 88 with a speed of only 44? Does that chalk up to just good positional play or smart play that results in taking the best possible route to the ball?
