6. Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has put to rest questions about his willingness to hang tough in the pocket.
When Carr lit it up at the Gruden QB Camp before the draft, I relayed to an evaluator what I'd seen on the practice field down in Orlando, Florida. He replied with a snide remark predicting Carr would wilt in the face of pressure because he hadn't shown a willingness to stand tough in the pocket at Fresno State. There were signs in late September that Carr was not going to follow the painful path his brother David took, even though he had taken some hard hits. The Buffalo Billsbeat up Carr on Sunday and sent him to the sideline limping, but it never looked like Carr flinched.
It's looking like the offensive coach I spoke with earlier in the season was right when he said this about Carr at the time: "This Carr might be put together better mentally [than his brother was]. I'm fired up. My thoughts were that when things get hot in the pocket, he may screw it up, but that has not happened. For a young guy, he is doing good. You cannot name a wide receiver for that team."
