If everyone in the 70's thought Hunter was so great, why did he only win ONE Cy Young award?
You brought up Jenkins (1) and Blyleven (0).

How many Cy Young awards did Mussina win? Drabek, Hentgen, McDowell, Cone, Zito, Carpenter, Webb, etc...all won more Cy's than Mussina during the years he pitched. Guess they were better than him.

And if I was making the argument that any of those pitchers were great based solely on the claim that people thought they were great, you'd have a point.

But I'm not.

Jenkins, Blyleven, Mussina were great because they were actually great. We can see how effective they were at preventing runs from scoring. Hunter, on the other hand...

According to you, 2000 Brad Radke was as equally great as 2016 Max Scherzer.

Maybe you have a flawed understanding of "great"?

No, according to baseball reference, Radke's 2000 season was about as valuable as Scherzer's 2016.

Maybe you should try a little common sense then, instead of just blinding following what a website tells you.

ERA of 4.45 and a WHIP of 1.38 vs ERA of 2.98 and WHIP of 0.97 - even the different offensive climates they pitched in are not enough to bridge that gap. Not to mention Scherzer struck out hitters at twice the rate.

And you wonder why people think you're dumb.

It's **** like that which makes BL so entertaining in these forums. He actually believes the crap that he posts, and will defend it to the bitter end.

You say, "even the different offensive climates they pitched in are not enough to bridge that gap," but do you know that for a fact?

I don't think you do.

And yeah Scherzer had a lot more K's, but WAR doesn't measure K's. It literally only evaluates runs allowed.
7/18/2017 1:33 PM
Ok. According to B-R, Radke had an ERA+ of 111 in 2000. Scherzer was at 143 last season - a number Radke didn't touch once in his career. Scherzer gave up 37 fewer runs than Radke between those two seasons, and led the league in WHIP last year. And no, the differences between when they pitched do not bridge that gap.

You can't even interpret the data you reference.

ERA+ and WAR are not the same thing.

I know. WAR is subjective.

You're putting together a fantasy league team. You have to choose between 2000 Brad Radke and 2016 Max Scherzer for a spot on your pitching rotation.

Al: Scherzer
Bob: Scherzer
Carl: Scherzer
Dave: Scherzer
Ed: Scherzer
Frank: Scherzer
Greg: Scherzer
Hal: Scherzer
Iggy: Scherzer
Jake: Scherzer
Keith: Scherzer
Larry: Scherzer
Mike: Scherzer
Ned: Scherzer
Ollie: Scherzer
Pete: Scherzer
Quentin: Scherzer
Ray: Scherzer
Steve: Scherzer
Tom: Scherzer
Ullyses: Scherzer
Vic: Scherzer
Walt: Scherzer
Xavier: Scherzer
Yosef: Scherzer
Zach: Scherzer

and finally, BL: Hmmm . . . .

Obviously, for a fantasy team, you pick Scherzer because WAR isn't a category. I know you're dumb, but are you really this dumb?
7/18/2017 1:44 PM
And do you know why it's not a category? Because it's subjective.
