Obviously all hitters should try to make less outs. Now we’re away from “an out is an out” and on to arguing about whether or not there’s a trade off with a different approach.
There is.
Maybe it’s worth it for Judge to change his approach, but I don’t see a huge upside there. He on-based 422. He slugged over 600. Trading away power for more contact seems foolish.
Now, if he can somehow make more contact while maintaining his power, sweet. He’d be Barry Bonds.
Hold on a sec.
I think we both agree that Trout saying he wanted to cut down on his strikeouts did not mean he wished to pop out more. Right? He felt, I hope we can agree again, that more contact would give him more opportunities to be on base. Ended up, he was right. Strikeouts down, OPS up.
So is there a legit reason Judge wouldn't feel the same way? A reason he wouldn't think more contact equals more opportunities to be on base? Or are you actually saying he shouldn't try to be better? Because, if you are, that's kinda dumb.
