We have two owners leaving, however one of the franchises has already been claimed. Now that the WS is over it's time to fill our last opening to start season 73. We only have one AL team available which will make for a short rollover and limit the amount of time you'll have to join us. Here is a brief review of the teams that will be looking for a new owner:
Former Salt Lake City Franchise (74-88, 2nd Pl) -
Filled
A fill in owner jumped in when the team was abandoned. The team wasn’t strong, but it wasn’t completely devoid of talent. The team has struggled for almost all of the last 8 seasons since a very successful long time owner left. Offensively this group was very solid with a .268 avg, 263 HRs, and 827 runs scored. Hugh Stanley (41, 86, .311) & Vladimir Sierra (42, 114, .274) drive the team’s production, yet there are others offering solid support. With over 80 unearned runs allowed, the defense needs to be addressed.
With a shaky defense behind them the pitching staff struggled mightily with a team ERA in above 4.70. In an anomaly that I’ve never seen before, two RP’s posted 20 wins (Raphael Sojo 20-8, 4.09 ERA & Miguel Vasquez 20-15, 4.34). In another strange move, only 4 players started games with three of them accounting for 147 starts.
The new owner should see how the defense can be improved while not weakening a very productive offense. Of possibly more importance will be upgrading the pitching staff with at least a couple of starting pitchers and possibly even more relief pitchers to get the hurlers more in line with the success of the hitters.
This team would be an excellent project for an experienced owner that can evaluate how to improve the defense and bring in pitching upgrades. A newbie could possibly handle this team, focusing on the pitching staff as they learn the game and figure out how to build a balanced team.
Former Madison Franchise (50-112, 4th Pl) -
Filled
A four-year slide culminated in a miss of the MWR forcing the removal of the owner. A .254 avg is below the league avg, 623 runs scored won’t leave much of a margin of error for a pitching staff, and 183 HRs doesn’t show an abundance of power. Wholesale changes will be needed to bring this team up to the level of those competing for a playoff spot.
The pitchers are equally responsible for this team’s struggles. The team ERA was uncomfortably close to 6.00, six hurlers had double-digit losses including all five starters, and 21 blown saves showed problems throughout the staff.
This will be a full rebuild with none of the ML roster looking like they can be salvaged. A vet or newbie would be able to handle the reins of this franchise. A vet that likes to tear down and build over will find this to be a challenge to their liking. A newbie would have the freedom to make mistakes without it drastically hurting the team.
So, take a look and let me know which of these franchises will fit the bill of a team you’d like to recreate.
