I grew up in Cincinnati and my family lived in a large apartment complex. During baseball season a few Reds players and coaches lived there with their families. Some of them were Bob Purkey, coach Dick Sisler and manager Fred Hutchinson.
During the 1964 seaon Hutch was in serious condition with cancer. At some point during the season, Hutch was hospitalized. It was public knowledge as reported in the newspapers and on TV that Hutch was in a major battle with cancer.
On this particular afternoon, I was hanging out with Hutch's 10 or11year-old son, Joey. Of course, he knew that that his father was very ill. We were in front of Joey's town house when a car pulled up. The driver got out and opened the passenger's door for Hutch, who was just coming home from the hospital.
Joey ran over to his dad and the two of them shared a long hug. I felt and still feel that this was a poignant moment between the two of them.I feel privileged to have been there.
