Filed under the heading: My Athletic director is smoking something

Just finished my first year in DII Allen in a truly unstellar fashion. 13-14, RPI 146, 7th in conference, no post season. The prior season, the Sim coach is 18-12, RPI 88, Reg Season Conf Champ, PI first round.

I get this letter from the AD:

"Coach,
I just wanted to send you a quick note to congratulate you on the great season. You're making me look like a genius (and the NCCU boosters and alumni are even happy). Why shouldn't they be? Quite the season!

And to top it off, my job status is now Exceeding Expectations.

Off point from the current discussion here, but I thought that was funny.

Nice win Polo. Hopefully I can beat up on some of your conference mates.

gg, i shot lights out, held you to under 40%, and was on my home court. and it was still a tight game. Your team is scary tough, i hate it.

and they're your conference mates too. but i dont think you'll be doing too much beating up. maybe squeeze out a win here and there

Man o man am I leary of all these preseason accolades. I've been preseason #1 twice in HD (though not this season) and have tanked out of the gate (to below .500 OOC records) both times. Granted it was tough competition, but I've learned to temper my excitement anytime I see a single digit ranking at the begining of the year. Besides I'm very leary of my defense (or lack there of), but I'm seceretly hoping you're all correct.
Anywho, nice start to the season. W/ 3 teams scoring 100+ on opening night, looks like we might have some real barn burners come conference play. Good luck over the remaining 9 games. After that I hate all of you for the next month :)

I thought after the College of NJ win, my team wouldn't be as bad as I thought... Now, after 2 straight lackluster losses, I realize there will definitely be a severe learning curve. Unfortunately, when my kids develop an ok IQ, that's when I get to run up against conference play...

Two questions... why is my star player not taking many shots, even though he is not being double teamed?
And why is a kid with a 100 WE who has been redshirted only improved 2 points thus far?
1/23/2007 3:49 AM
you can bump him up 5 or 6 more distro points. you probably have him around 25 right now. i'd say bring him up to a third of your offense. you need brewton scoring you 20 ppg this season for any success. his 3's are off as well. if you have him as a +1, i'd bump him down to a zero. with that low post rating he can back down most DIII SF's. that should increase his scoring and his 3pt percentage.... bumping up his distro means he will get doubled, but with that passing rating, i wouldnt worry too much....
as for the 100 WE guy.... he doesnt have too many improvable catagories. you always want to use 20-25 as a starting point for a rating. if its under 20, you will not get much improvement.
you have 3 options with him... scrap him (an 11 in rebounding isnt going to cut it), put most of his pratice minutes in low post and use him as an offensive weapon (could crack 80 LP by his JR season), or the biggest risk... but my recommendation.... put 7 minutes into conditioning, 10 minutes into LP, 9 min into FT's, and the rest into rebounding. with that 100 WE you could get that REB rating to 20 by the start of his Sophmore season. once it hits 20, you can get it up to around 50 by his senior year...
just a recruiting tip, always try and load up on rebounding. its probably the single most important catagory in DIII HD. If the numbers on Johnson were reversed (43 REB and 11 LP) you would be in much better shape. you can always find offense from somewhere else. but having a post player on the floor with a sub 35 REB rating kills a team.

Thanks sigsoho. I owed you one after the last 2 seasons.
Interesting stuff above polo.
Regarding CPOY award, I read on the main forum that there have been changes in regards to All-american awards going more towards players on winning squads. I haven't read if that applies to the all conference teams, but I guess I'll find out in a day or 2 when they're released in Crum. Might have to make some additional questions regarding all conference teams at the mid-season poll.

Good game sigsoho... just wish my team didn't fold down the stretch. Every non-conference win counts this season.

incase you guys didnt see in the main forum.. . .. a losing record cant get into the NT, but it can get into the PI.

you've had two rough losses so far kev. losing to a half court shot against medaille and by a point to our 13th member. good luck, you've got two very tough opponents before conference starts, hope you can pull them out.
