Game 121: Frank Viola pitches well into the eighth and the Riders have three 2-run innings as they take the opener from Washington, 7-1.

Game 122: Enos Cabell homers off Rick Sutcliffe in the eighth inning to snap a 4-4 tie, and the Riders strand two runners in the ninth as they drop a 5-4 decision.

Game 123: Mike Smithson is chased during a two-homer, six-run second inning, and the Commandos take the series with a 7-3 victory.

Now trailing Minnesota by five games, the Riders head home to face Chicago.

Game 124: Hal McRae hits a two-run home run in the first inning; Albert Williams and the bullpen make it stick, beating the Goats 2-1. Rich Gossage throws a scoreless ninth for his 29th save.

Game 125: With two outs in the ninth, Rich Gossage suffers his seventh blown save, allowing a solo home run to Jason Thompson that ties the score. The Riders win it in the 11th, though, when Jerry Mumphrey singles with the bases loaded and two out.

Game 126: Milwaukee scores five times in the first, getting a three-run double from Hal McRae and a two-run homer from Roy Smalley, then adds three more in the second, rolling to a 15-7 win over Chicago that allows Frank Viola to even his record at 5-5.

Having cut Minneosta's lead to three games, we now face a huge series at home against the Lame Ducks.

Game 127: Minnesota sets the tone with an eight-run second inning that chases Rick Sutcliffe. Milwaukee rallies for four in the bottom half of the inning but can't get the margin any closer, losing 10-6.

Game 128: Bryan Little and Dan Ford drive in three runs apiece as the Riders fall into another early hole en route to a four-run loss, 9-5 in this one.

Game 129: Milwaukee gets six scoreless innings from Albert Williams, a three-run homer from Bill Madlock, and an exceedingly precarious save from Rich Gossage as they beat Minnesota 4-2 to avoid a devastating sweep, falling only a game further back in the series.

We now head to Atlanta to play Georgia Force. Time is running short.

Game 130: The Riders fall another game back as Rich Gossage gives another one away, allowing two runs in the ninth to give Atlanta a 6-5 win. It's Gossage's eighth blown save of the season.

Game 131: Bill Madlock and Jerry Mumphrey have four hits and three runs each, with Madlock adding four RBI to his line, as the Riders pound out 20 hits in a 13-3 romp over Georgia Force.

Game 132: Atlanta gets two big innings on offense, including a three-run homer by Davey Lopes, and six shutout innings from Atlee Hammaker, and they take the rubber match of the series by a 5-2 margin.

Cleveland is in town next.. Riders trail Minnesota by five games now.

Game 133: While Milwaukee's 2-3-4 hitters suffer through a 2-15 day, striking out five times and stranding 19 baserunners (eight by Jeffrey Leonard), the 6 through 9 hitters have two hits each and Milwaukee beats the Saltdogs 7-3.

Game 134: Jeffrey Leonard and Bill Madlock hit two-run homers in the first, Jerry Mumphrey has a five-hit day, and Albert Williams improves to 8-4 with an 8-5 win over Cleveland.

Game 135: Bobby Grich's three-run double in the third proves to be the difference; Cleveland gets four scoreless innings from its bullpen and takes the series finale 4-2.

The Mammoths are in town next.

Game 136: Frank Viola gets pounded for six runs before leaving in the fourth and the Riders can't come back, losing 6-2 to New York.

Game 137: The Riders bounce back to take game 2, with Rick Sutcliffe throwing a complete game 5-hit shutout for an 8-0 decision. Sutcliffe improves to 11-11.

Game 138: Milwaukee getrs another complete game, this one from Mike Smithson, but the real story is the offense, which rampages for 24 hits (in 46 at bats) in a 15-3 rout of the Mammoths. Three Riders have four hits; Tim Raines steals four bases.

We are headed for Washington to face the Commandos before returning home to... um, face the Commandos.

Game 139: Frank DiPino and Rich Gossage each throw a scoreless inning (which may be the first time all season that's happened) and the Riders hold off the Commandos 5-4. Albert Williams improves to 9-4.

Game 140: Jeffrey Leonard's two-out error opens the floodgates to a six-run fourth, and the Commandos even the series with a 7-6 win.

Game 141: The dispirited Riders collect only six hits, distributed evenly amongst the 6-7-8 hitters in the lineup, and lose 6-2.

We get Washington at home next. Out by seven games now, the divisional race is essentially over.

Game 142: The Riders get off to a fast start, scoring four times in the first inning, and go on to defeat the Commandos 7-3, beating a Niekro (Joe) for a change. Rick Sutcliffe goes eight for the win, improving to 12-11.

Game 143: Frank DiPino throws TWO scoreless innings in relief, Mike Madden and Rich Gossage follow with 1-2-3 8th and 9th innings, respectively, and the Riders hold on for a 5-3 win.

Game 144: Frank DiPino allows a two-run triple in the seventh, erasing a 5-4 Rider lead, but Milwaukee gets a break in the bottom of the ninth when Luis Salazar boots Bruce Benedict's leadoff grounder to put a man on base. Damaso Garcia follows with a game-tying triple, then scores the winner on Tim Raines' single. Ron Reed gets the win in relief, improving to 8-3.

The Riders host Chicago next.

Game 145: Britt Burns throws seven shutout innings and Rich Gossage bails out Frank DiPino in the ninth as the Riders topple the Goats 4-2.

Game 146: Tim Conroy throws four scoreless innings in relief and Tim Raines steals three bases as the Riders get another two-run win over Chicago, 5-3.

Game 147: Jerry Mumphrey has five hits to lead a 19-hit attack and the Riders complete a sweep of Chicago with a 12-4 victory.

We now travel to Minnesota to face the first place Lame Ducks, who lead us by six games.

Game 148: Rich Gossage suffers his ninth blown save, following two singles in the ninth with consecutive walks to Andre Thornton and Mike Schmidt to drive in the tying run, but the Riders score twice in the 10th and Mike Madden throws a scoreless bottom half to preserve a 6-4 win.

Game 149: Mike Schmidt hits a three-run homer with two out in the bottom of the ninth off Mike Madden to snap a 1-1 tie and give the Lame Ducks a 4-1 victory, evening the series.

Game 150: Tim Conroy throws 4.1 scoreless innings in relief of a wild Britt Burns (seven walks in 4.2 IP) to take credit for the win as the Riders pound out 16 hits to beat Minnesota 13-4 in their final meeting of the season.

The Riders final home series of the year is next, against Georgia Force of Atlanta.

Game 151: Jeffrey Leonard's three-run homer caps a four-run ninth that sends the game to extras, but Atlanta wins it in the 10th, getting a single, a sacrifice bunt, and another single off Frank DiPino. The Riders go down in order in the bottom of the inning, losing 10-9.

Game 152: The middle of the Rider lineup is mostly silent and they drop another game, 6-3 to Atlanta.

Game 153: Georgia Force sends Milwaukee starter Mike Smithson to the showers in the first inning and ends Milwaukee's home schedule on a disastrous note, pounding out 25 hits in a 21-6 rout.

Season-ending road trip begins in Cleveland.

Game 154: Albert Williams has problems controlling his fastball, walking six in five innings, and the Riders shut down their bats for the day after four innings; Cleveland wins the opener 6-5.

Game 155: The Riders' bats stay on the quiet side and they drop another game in Cleveland, 5-1. Britt Burns takes the loss.

Game 156: Milwaukee wakes from its slumber and pounds out 19 hits in a 13-8 win to avoid a sweep. Frank DiPino defuses a dangerous situation in the eighth and walks away with his first save of the season.

We're off to New York to face the Mammoths.

Game 157: Rick Sutcliffe has a rough outing, the bullpen is even worse, and Danny Darwin gets his 19th win as the Mammoths defeat the Riders 13-7. New York blasts four home runs, two off Sammy Stewart in his .1 innings of work.

Game 158: Frank DiPino strikes out the side in the eighth and Rich Gossage allows only a two-out single in the ninth as Milwaukee holds off the Mammoths 4-3.

Game 159: Roy Smalley drives in four runs and Albert Williams gets his 10th win of the season as Milwaukee takes the series with a 6-3 win. Rich Gossage gets the save again, his 38th of the season.

The season ends with a trip to San Diego

Game 160: Milwaukee scores six times in the first inning, but Britt Burns doesn't take long to give all that back (and more). The Riders take a 9-7 lead into the ninth, but Rich Gossage and Ron Kittle conspire to blow the game, giving the Mariners a 10-9 win.

Game 161: Damaso Garcia steals second and scores on Roy Smalley's single in the top of the 10th; Rich Gossage throws a clean bottom half for his 39th save and the Riders win 3-2.

Game 162: Gossage fails in the ninth once again, his 11th blown save of the season, but the Riders score twice in the 12th and hold on for an 8-7 win to finish the year with an 87-75 record, eight back of Minnesota.
