The Riders get one All Star, Nate Colbert, elected the starting first baseman for the Patriot League. Colbert is hitting .314 and slugging .590, with seven doubles, seven triple, and 15 homers. He leads the team with 49 runs scored and 64 RBI.
Larry Hisle has 13 doubles, 11 homers, 47 runs and 52 RBI. Richie Hebner (hitting .318) has scored 46 but has only two homers and 32 RBI. Wayne Comer is the fourth Rider with 40 runs scored, hitting that mark exactly.
Rookie Tyron Carrigan is hitting .436 with an OBP of .489. Hebner's OBP of .418 leads the "regulars".
Ron Reed (7-5, 3.91, 1.30) and Jim Maloney (6-4, 3.11, 1.20) are the top starters. Tommy John has been a disappointment at 3-9 (4.47, 1.54).
In the pen, Bob Humphreys (6.69 ERA) has been atrocious, and is 0/7 in save opportunities. The team is 15/27 overall. Ken Johnson, Darold Knowles, and even Ted Abernathy have been basically solid out of the pen while Humphreys and Pee Wee Musick have been terrible. Bill Lee has not pitched well (11.75 ERA) but is 4/4 in saves.
3/13/2007 10:26 PM
We start the second half against the 47-34 White Sox.
Game 82: A lot of homers in this game, which is odd, because it was certainly not a slugfest. Tom Seaver homered in the third for the White Sox, but Wayne Comer answered with his own homer in the fifth. Comer's blast tied the score at two, and that's how it stayed through the ninth. Pat Dobson came in to pitch the tenth for Chicago, and retired the leadoff man, Nate Colbert, making his first appearance in weeks. Colbert ended the day 0-5. Larry Hisle, batting next, put one over the fence to give Milwaukee the lead. Roy Face relieved Dobson, but it made no difference. Al Ferrara hit his second homer of the season on the first pitch. Ted Abernathy allowed a leadoff homer to Rick Monday in the bottom half, but then shut things down and the Riders start the second half with a 4-3 win.
Game 84: The bullpen collapses again, allowing six runs in the seventh as the White Sox win the finale, 8-3. A fine performance by Jim Maloney is wasted.. he allows no earned runs in 5.2 innings and lowers his ERA to 2.94. He also hits his second homer of the season.
Game 83: The Riders waste a golden opportunity in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with one out, but still score twice to take a 5-4 lead over the White Sox. In the bottom of the ninth, Ted Abernathy reverts to early-season form, walking two batters and giving up a game-tying single. That brings in Ken Johnson to face Bill Melton, who had given Chicago a lead in the eighth with a solo home run. Johnson throws three pitches to Melton, the last of which is deposited over the fence for a game-winning homer.
Milwaukee has three interleague matchups on tap, starting with Pittsburgh.
3/13/2007 10:26 PM
Game 85: Milwaukee sends Nate Colbert, Larry Hisle, and Richie Hebner down to AAA for this interleague stretch to allow them some rest and an extended break. The game at Forbes Field goes as well as can be expected.. Eddie Leon's two-run single in the seventh gives the Riders a 3-2 lead and the bullpen holds on for a change. Ken Johnson gets the last out for his second save in a 4-2 win.
Game 86: The return trip to Milwaukee is a disappointment as Denny Sharritts falls to 2-8. Sharritts' lack of control hurts him as he walks home a run with the bases loaded. Wayne Comer homers for the Riders but the Riders bullpen is ineffective and Pittsburgh earns a split with a 7-3 win.
San Francisco is up next.. they lead the NL West with a 53-33 record.
Game 87: Bob Didier has four hits for Frisco and a late Rider rally falls just short as the storm takes a 9-8 victory. The Riders get late pinch-hit, three run hits by both Scott Pickeral (double) and Al Ferrara (homer) but Josef Clutch grounds into a double play to end the game with the tie run on base.
Game 88: Ron Reed and Steve Carlton lock up in a classic, with Reed throwing nine scoreless innings and Carlton eight. The game enters extra innings with no score. Kenneth Jansen reaches on an error with two out in the tenth, but Josef Clutch fouls out to end the threat. Ted Abernathy walks Johnny Roseboro with two out in the bottom half of the inning, and Jose Tartabull follows with a double to right center. Wayne Comer's throw is late, and pinch runner Tito Fuentes scores the winner.
Finally, a "breather" as the fourth place NY Knights (33-55) come to town.
3/15/2007 9:02 AM
Milwaukee has agreed to two trades.
In the first, we agree to send OF Wayne Comer and P Bob Humphreys to Cincinnati for a couple of replacement AAA hitters and Cincy's second round draft choice.
In the second, we ship our top starter, Jim Maloney, to St. Louis for Gerry Arrigo and St. Louis' second round selection.

3/16/2007 2:48 PM
Game 89: Jim Maloney, in what is probably his last start for the Riders, throws 8.1 shutout innings at the Knights AND hits his third home run. Milwaukee wins, 4-0.
Game 90: Wayne Comer has two hits and two runs scored while Ted Sizemore has three hits and two RBI to back Don Cardwell, who evens his record at 6-6 as the Riders top New York 3-2.
We return to PL opponents as we host Washington (44-46) next.
3/16/2007 3:25 PM
Game 91: Tommy John pitches one of his best games of the season, allowing one run in seven innings, and Wayne Comer hits a grand slam as the Riders win, 9-1. Nate Colbert returns to the lineup with a three-run homer and and RBI ground out.
Game 92: Denny Sharritts, who will be depended on to fill a spot in the rotation in Maloney's absence, gets shelled again, allowing all of the Commandos runs in the first three innings of a 5-1 loss. Sharritts' ERA is 6.10 and his record is 2-9. Logan Nadermann drives home Milwaukee's only run.
Game 93: Washington scores four in the fourth off Ron Reed, hitting consecutive triples in the process, but Nate Colbert narrows the lead to one with a three-run blast in the bottom half. The game is scorelss from that point until the eighth, when Ted Sizemore drives home Richie Hebner with a game-tying run. Sizemore comes up big two innings later when he hits a one-out triple in the tenth. Larry Hisle follows with a single, and the Riders win 5-4.
The Riders will host Detroit next.
3/17/2007 7:18 AM
Game 94: Gary Waslewski's first start is a disaster from both sides. Detroit rocks Waslewski for 10 hits and six runs in 4.1 innings, while the Stars' Catfish Hunter throws a complete game against the Riders. Final score: Detroit 7, Milwaukee 1. Ted Sizemore's eighth inning home run prevents the shutout.
Game 95: Don Cardwell throws six scoreless innings, Ted Sizemore continues his hot hitting with three hits, and newly acquired AAA infielder William Rardon contributes a two-run single as the Riders even the series with an 8-1 win.
Game 96: In a battle of disappointing pitchers, the Riders outhit the Stars 10-9, including a triple from Tommy John, but it is John that ends up the loser, dropping a 5-2 decision to Dick Drago (now 3-9). Johns falls to 4-11.
We're off to Cleveland to face the 48-48 Flames.
3/18/2007 6:48 AM
Game 97: Al Ferrara and Ted Sizmore hit consecutive doubles to give Milwaukee a 3-2 lead in the sixth, but Cleveland ties the score in the seventh. Reliever Pee Wee Musick does well to avoid further damage from a bases-loaded, one out situation. Ferrara triples to lead off the ninth, but is thrown out trying to score on a ground ball. Pinch hitter William Rardon makes things right, however, doubling home the lead run. Bill Lee works a scoreless bottom half for his fifth save.
Game 98: Ron Reed hits a triple and pitches 6.2 innings of one-run ball as the Riders take game 2, 4-2. Richie Hebner hits his third homer of the season. Larry Hisle steals his 11th base.
Game 99: Gary Waslewski throws six scoreless innings, and Nate Colbert blasts his 18th homer, but the bullpen collapses in the eighth and the offense sputters both before and after Colbert's blast, leading to a 3-1 loss in the finale.
Milwaukee returns home to face the 24-75 New York Mammoths.
3/19/2007 6:29 AM
Game 100: Milwaukee collects 11 hits and eight walks, but manages only four runs through eight innings, which leaves them vulnerable when Ken Johnson blows up for the second straight game, allowing the Mammoths to tie the score in the top of the ninth (with some help from Ted Sizemore). In the bottom half, however, Larry Hisle and Sizemore draw walks to lead off the inning. Hisle moves to third on a ground ball, and Scott Pickeral hits a fly ball deep enough to score him with the game-winner.
Game 101: Terry Harmon scores four times, Nate Colbert hits his eighth triple and drives home four runs, and Tommy John gets his fifth win as the Riders triumph, 8-2.
Game 102: Denny Sharritts gives another decent performance, but Gerry Arrigo allows three in the fifth to put the Riders down, 4-0. Nate Colbert leads off the bottom half with his 19th homer to make it 4-1, but neither team scores again through the eighth. Darold Knowles and Pee Wee Musick get through a scoreless top half in the ninth. Kenneth Jansen and Terry Harmon lead off the bottom half with singles. Richie Hebner lines out, bringing up.. Nate Colbert. Colbert gives another one a ride to the bleachers, tying the game at four. Clyde Wright replaces Bob Locker for the Mammoths. Larry Hisle greets him with a double. Ted Sizemore hits a dying quail to , but Walt Williams can't catch up to it and it falls in for a game-winning single.
We're off to Minneapolis to face the Muskies.
3/20/2007 6:30 AM
Game 103: The Muskies currently lead the wild card race, largely on the strength of their offense (10th in the league in runs scored, 18th in ERA). They take an early 4-0 lead, but then an error by Willie Horton and a passed ball by Manny Sanguillen lead to five unearned runs for the Riders in the seventh, making the score 6-4. The Muskies score once in the bottom half of the seventh, then rattle Gerry Arrigo in the ninth. Arrigo throws two wild pitches, hits a batter, and finally grooves one for Willie Horton, who blasts a game-winning three run homer.
It may be time to rethink our pitching rotation, as this loss was directly attributable to having no quality relievers available.. they were overworked in Sharritts' start.
Game 104: Jerry May hits a two-run homer in the top of the second, but Minnesota answers with three in the bottom half and never looks back in a 7-4 win over the Riders. Gary Waslewski allows 10 hits over five innings.
Game 105: If we weren't convinced that the playoffs were a pipe dream, we are now. Minnesota completes a sweep, winning the finale 2-1 when Kenneth Jansen's two-base error in the bottom of the ninth puts the winning run in scoring position. Manny Sanguillen's pinch hit single off Gerry Arrigo wins it.
Milwaukee comes back to County Stadium to face the 70-35 IronBirds of Baltimore.
3/21/2007 6:32 AM
Game 106: Milwaukee battles Baltimore in the opener, taking them into extra innings before running out of rested relievers and turning (yet again) to Gerry Arrigo, who allows two runs in the 11th. Baltimore wins, 4-2. Ted Sizemore's triple accounts for the Riders' only runs.
Game 107: Denny Sharritts labors in this one, allowing four runs before being yanked in the fourth, but Gerry Arrigo really puts the icing on the cake, facing six batters, all of whom score, in a 14-2 blowout.
Game 108: We salvage a game, winning the finale 3-2 when Jerry May catches the tie run trying to steal second in the ninth. Ted Sizemore continues his hot hitting with two hits and two RBI. Ron Reed wins his ninth game.
We are off to Fenway to face the Stranglers.
3/22/2007 9:19 AM
Game 109: Richie Hebner has four hits and the Riders rally for five in the ninth to take the opener, 7-3. Milwaukee uses six singles and a walk to score their big rally. Pee Wee Musick gets the win in relief, his fourth victory against one loss. Sparky Lyle falls to 1-6 for Boston.
Game 110: Sparky Lyle redeems himself, pitching two scoreless innings to preserve a 6-3 win for the Stranglers. Jim Spencer hits three homers for Boston, giving him six for the season. Rider batters strike out 13 times.
Game 111: Denny Sharritts! He not only pitches into the fifth inning for a change, but he has three hits, including two with the bases loaded, and four RBI. Logan Nadermann hits his first home run and the Riders survive 12 LOB in a 12-5 pasting.
Although the trades of Maloney and Comer seemed like they would be a death sentence for this team, the performance hasn't actually dropped appreciably. At 50-61, we still have a better record than eight other teams and are only six games behind the much better financed Kansas City entry. We return home to face the Central-leading White Sox next.
3/23/2007 2:49 PM
Game 112: Chicago's Tom Seaver suffers a rare setback, victimized both by the White Sox' defense and Larry Hisle's bat, allowing seven runs in six innings. After his exit, the Riders hit three home runs off Roy Face in a four-batter span, and Ron Reed cruises to his 10th win, 11-1. Seaver falls to 13-3. Hisle hits two homers, William Rardon hits a triple and homer, and Jerry May collects a double and homer.
Game 113: Chicago gets revenge in game 2, breaking the game open with a five-run fifth inning and coasting to a 10-4 win. Bill Melton hits two doubles, giving him 31, and Ted Kubiak drives home four for the victors. Milwaukee's Nate Colbert hits his 21st homer and his ninth triple.
Game 114: The bullpen chokes up a 4-2 lead, allowing single runs in both the eighth and ninth innings, but gets an unexpected two scoreless innings from Gerry Arrigo in relief, which buys just enough time to work the batting order around to Jerry May again. May, with three hits and a double in regulation, blasts a one-out homer in the bottom of the 11th to win the game, his sixth of the season.
We're headed east to face the 56-58 Washington Commandos.
