Getting rid of Boyes was a big mistake. I watched him all his years of junior, he will be an excellent 20-30 goal scorer for many years

True, but at least they got something of value out of the Thornton trade, Wideman hasn't shown me too much in relation to the value of Boyes

Let's see, less than 2 years later, how does that trade look?

Brad Stuart - 48 pts in 103 games before he as a free agent.
Marco Sturm - 101 pts in 145 games
Wayne Primeau - 29 pts in 101 games before being traded for the 2 players below.

Chuck Kobasew - 11 points in 28 games
Andrew Ference - 6 points in 39 games.

Combined for 195 points in 416 games.

Meanwhile, there's Joe Thornton:

230 pts in 161 games(and 20 points in 22 playoff games) as well as an Art Ross Trophy and a Hart Trophy.

Please explain to me how the Boyes trade is/was worse.

2005-2006
Bruins 23 9 24 33 0 6 3 0 2 60 15.0
2005-2006Sharks 58 20 72 92 31 55 8 0 4 135 14.8
Season Team Gms G A P +/- PIM PP SH GW SOG%

Clearly Thornton was either unhappy and or underperforming in Boston, so equating his performance after the trade is not an accurate barometer of what he would have done if he remained in Boston

Or maybe the coaching stuff was so poor that they were misusing him? Perhaps the front office was so inept that they failed to surround him with quality teammates? The fact of the matter is, he went elsewhere, and has fulfilled the promise that we all heard about when he was drafted. Do you think the 3 stiffs the Bruins got for him would have put up those numbers had they stayed in San Jose?
I'm still waiting for your explanation as to how the Boyes trade was worse.

The Boyes/Wideman trade was not even close to the Thornton deal. The trade was not really good for the Bruin's because they clearly did not need another puck moving d-man. Wideman was a great special teams player in St. Louis, but he is not going to do much for a porous defense.

Wideman sucks. He doesn't even know how to play defense.

F the Flyers. Too bad Lucic was out with a concussion. He'd have wreaked some havoc in the 3rd.

What are you talking about! He's what's missing! In fact I bet he is missing lots of things with every start he gets!

I told my son this morning, and just started at me in disbelief and said "Why?"

"Clearly Thornton was either unhappy and or underperforming in Boston, so equating his performance after the trade is not an accurate barometer of what he would have done if he remained in Boston"

Actually, if you project Thornton's numbers from 23 to 58 games, they look remarkably similar to his 58 games in SJ.

Bos (23 actual) 9-24-33
Bos (58 projected) 23-60-83
SJ (58 actual) 20-72-92

So, it looks like his performance in Boston was a good indicator. I mean he did have 33 points in 23 games.

Bruins win again...is this team starting to turn the corner?
