That ties up season 13; we're already two exhibition games plus two real games into

SEASON 14
4/19/2009 8:12 PM
Here's the new roster including new recruits w/ imrovements after four games (two exh, two RS). I was very happy with the recruiting class, but we are obviously beyond inexperienced this year. We're going to take our lumps, but it should be for the best over the following seasons.

Season 14 was better than I expected. Vassar went 21-11, reaching the quarterfinals of the PIT. My strategy to start the season was to give the ball to Marquez whenever he was on the floor and spread it around equally when he wasn't; this way I hoped to i.d. other scoring options.

But what happened was that, with Marquez flinging shots from all over the gym, we seemed to perform much better than I could reasonably have expected, even against double teams and plus defenses. So I just kept feeding him, with the only exception being that late in the season I gave Calvillo some distro when I expected plus D.

This experinece convinced me that spd, BH, and possibly stm are more important for a scoring guard than pe, presuming pe at least reaches a minimum level. I know that's not the biggest revelation, but Marquez's season made it seem more pronounced.

The only thing I would add to that is that, although I did not start off the season expecting any postseason play at all, I did get my hopes up a bit. Our RPI was as good as 30 mid-season, and we were still hovering in the high 40's-low 50's late in the year. By the time we reached the conference semis, both number one seeds had been surprisingly knocked out, and we were playing a team we had beaten twice by a combined 47. We were hoping for a CT title and seemed even to have a shot at an at-large NT berth if we won only the semis.

But we lost that one by 34. We were a 3 seed in the PIT, and managed convincing home and road wins before falling hard on the road to the region's 1 seed. That team, Carroll, improved by that win to 30-1! But they lost in the PIT final four.
