After a rocky start, it turned into a good season for Vassar. We went 5-5 in non-conference, which had us stumbling around in the high-100's RPI range with a conference slate crammed with sims still ahead of us. But our non-conf foes played well in their own conferences, improving our SOS, and meanwhile we managed to run the table in the Empire 8.
So we entered our CT on the bubble for the NT, standing 21-5 with our RPI around 40. We made the bid a non-issue by taking the CT, Vassar's first since season 7.
With a 6th seed in our region, we defeated 11th-seeded Lynchburg 109-71 and then 3rd seed Millsaps 76-66; in the latter game, we saw a 22-point lead dwindle to one with 2:28 to play. But we finished the game on a 15-6 run to take it.
We were then thoroughly outplayed by Becker from the NAC in the sweet sixteen in a 55-34 loss. I was very impressed by coach carlbuzz's ability to vary his strategy based on the opposition, and he certainly out-strategized us.
So our season ended there. For a team with no seniors, Vassar did pretty well and finished ranked (11th) for the first time in school history. I'm looking forward to next season (more to come), but in the meantime here comes some season 15 business.
