I have a question, could an A+/A- fielding 3B play decent defense at SS? Maybe C/C..?

In a 2004 regressive i will have Aramis Ramirez and Vinny Castilla at 3B. My plan was to have Castilla for after Ramirez becomes a rookie. I have Neifi Perez at SS for the future, but would like to get both of their big bats in the line up. I would use Aramis at 3B, A/D- and Vinny Castilla at SS A+/A-.

If not, could Vinny Castilla play solid anywhere else, maybe in the outfield? I would use him at 1B, but i have Lyle Overbay who has been putting up big numbers for me there.

My guess is that he wouldn't play any better then mediocre defense at SS. Anyone has any idea's.

Doesn't quite help, but I did have an A/C+ 3B (Billy Johnson, 1951) play OUTSTANDING defense all season at second base in a progressive.

Any idea's on where he may fit are helpful. I have thought of 2nd, but i have Luis Castillo. The positions i can move him to would basically be SS or the OF.

If my math is right he'll probably look more like a B-/D guy at short , but he should fine.

I just finished playing 1989 Terry Pendleton (A/A) at SS for part of a season and the results were great.

67 games, 602.3 innings, 9 errors in 341 Att, .974 Fld%, 0+, 0-

I think he'll be like a B+/C- guy at SS. You should be fine.

EDIT: C+/C-

Espicially in a progressive/regressive league. Quite a few owners do the player OOP shuffle.

At least they fixed somewhat the DH fielding issue. In a 1979 progressive I started Willie Horton at 1b for 146 games (no fielding stats) 29e 13(-) plays. It used to be a whole lot worse, before the update.

I've used A/B 3B DeCinces at SS over a full season and he did well enough. I'd guess B/D+. Took a hit on range but was not bad for errors or - plays.

I have 71 Nettles (A/A+ (.973/3.62)) playing SS in a progressive. So far (46 Games) he has 32 errors, 6 - plays and a .932 FP. Not so great IMO..... He's at Wrigley and my pitching is HORRIBLE. That may be contributing.

Thanks for all the input guys, it sounds like it could be doable. I will make a post after the season and let anyone who's interested in knowing how he did.

Update

Vinny Castilla finishes the season with the 4th highest fielding percentage and range in the league. He committed 11 errors and had 0 + plays and 2 - plays. Also, of the 3 players ahead of him with better range, they made 15(Derek Jeter), 19(Jack Wilson) and 23(Khalil Greene) errors respectively.

.....and how did your team fare?

We finished the season tied for the wild card, we lost in game 163.

I played Joe Morgan at SS and he fielded a cool 87%. There must be something broken with the 3b to SS move. 2nd is supposed to be one step closer to SS than 3b is.

Yeah, i expected an A/A fielder to at least play C/C defense, but he definitely shocked me.

So clearly the strategy was a success. You keep your best hitters in the lineup and it paid off. I'd rather sacrifice some on the defensive end, for the clearly better offensive option. Kudos....
