Brewers designate 1B Chris Carter for assignment, reportedly trying to work out a trade for him, after signing three-year Korean Baseball veteran Eric Thames to a 3-year deal (with option for 2020). Thames, who had decidedly mediocre results in the big leagues before going to Korea, was something of a monster there, achieving a 40-40 season in 2015 and winning the league's MVP. While he has played only OF in MLB, Thames played 1B in Korea.
Carter tied for the NL lead with 41 homers this season, but hit .220-something and posted strikeout totals that would make Rob Deer blush.
Seems stupid to lock yourself into Thames for three years but it's not like the Brewers have any decent minor league prospects at 1B and Thames can also play a corner OF position (which could be useful if Braun is traded).
