Conference Awards

Voted by actual members of The Big Ten

Conference Coach of the Year: Scottevans21, Northwestern: Northwestern is a team in every sense and the man at the head of it all is Scott. This season he lead his team to the number 1 seed in the National Tournament as well as winning The Big Ten Conference Tournament. He did all this even though he lost his best player last year to the NBA. Northwestern Basketball is becoming big nationally now, and it is all because of Scott.

Conference Freshmen of the Year: Robert Lawson, Michigan State: "Hype" Lawson lived up to his nickname by becoming a great scorer off the bench this season for The Spartans. He led all Freshmen in The Big Ten in scoring and steals and has his coach sweating by declaring that he is NBA ready. Hopefully Coach Tmac can keep him around for a few more years so we can see him fully grow.

Conference Defensive Player of the Year: Carl Stevens, Michigan: Stevens was the star of a Michigan team that went 14-14. He was a defensive precense on the floor every night, averaging 1.2 bpg and .6 spg. However, his game went beyond then numbers. Stevens gained the reputation throughout the season as a lock down defender, someone who can shut down the Big Ten's biggest stars. The NBA is certainly interested in this guy.

Conference Player of the Year: Don Pettry, Iowa: This do it all star was one of the biggest reasons that Iowa enjoyed the season that it did. Pettry was a force all over the court, averaging 16.8 ppg, 4 rpg, 3.2 apg, and 1.7 spg. Those numbers are huge for anyone, let alone a breakout star who did not even start at Iowa last year. Pettry contributes his success to "My new coach who had the common sense to put the ball in my hands and the man upstairs" and is certianly an interesting prospect for the upcoming draft. Until then, Don intends to lead Iowa to a PI Championship. And with numbers like those, who could possibly doubt him.

Spartan Report: Recruiting

Its that time again Spartan fans. A new season is on the horizon and recruiting has ended. Coach Tmac has been quoted as saying "I love our class. This is how we need to recruit to win a championship". In our opinion, Coach might be on to something.

Here are the commitments.

Scott "Juno" Jones: 32 Overall, 8 Small Forward


Juno is pretty much locked into a small forward role. He is too slow to be a guard and too bad a rebounder to be a big man. However, he projects to be a great 3. He is already a good enough  athlete and will grow into a role as an inside out scorer. Right now I see Juno starting as a junior, hopefully he is actually a 4 year player.

Robert "Modo" Schwartzbach: 23 Overall, 3 Center



This might be MSUs most complicated nickname. First he was "Hunchbach", then he was "Quasimodo", now he is "Modo".  Whatever he is, he is going to be a scorer. Modo is an athletic freak with an established post game who is still developing his skills on the other side of the court. He currently is slotted in as the backup center and should start alongside Pronk as a junior.

James "Steel" Neely: 11 Overall, 4 Small Forward
 

Steel joins the Spartans after ignoring home favorite Kentucky and making a last minute switch from Indiana. Steel is the type of player Coach needs to win a title. He is going to be an absurdly talented player by his talent year when he is projected to start at the Shooting Guard spot. He will start this year at small forward just because Coach needed to offer him a start to get him. Michigan State has had the last 2 NFOY, Steel could be the 3rd.

Well folks it’s that time of year again where the Wolverine faithful are gearing up to what we all hope will be a solid year of Basketball. Coach Goofypook returns a solid and experienced group of players who have logged a lot of minutes, Led by Pre-Season All American Carl Stevens. Coach Goofypook was recently quoted as saying “Carl Stevens is everything that is good about College sports”! Stevens who pulled his named out of draft consideration last season is looking forward to getting to the Big Dance for the first time since his Freshman Season. When all is said and done Stevens could be the all time leading scorer at Michigan!!

Outlook:
Michigan has the players and the Talent to make a run at a Big Ten Title. With early Big Ten Contest Vs Michigan St. and Illinois, the Wolverines will definitely be tested early! Coach Goofypook stated that consistent effort will be the key to the season. “As long as we bring the right effort each and every night, we will win a lot of Basketball games”
Newcomers:
This year the Wolverines class consisted of 4 players led by sensational Point Guard Aaron Demar out of Manchester HS. The other player who will be expected to contribute immediately is UCLA Transfer Joseph Geller! When asked why he left UCLA Geller was quoted as saying “Coach Daveymac is a CROOK! He sold me a bill of goods, and didn’t make good on any of it” Looks like Geller is out to prove a few people wrong! Also joining the squad this season are Gary Levinson and John Loesch whom Coach Goofypook call an “integral part of your future”!
Athletic Directors Pre season Predictions:

EAST
Michigan St-Loaded but Young… Should be interesting to see these kids in East Lansing
Wisconsin- Will the Curse of Swimms continue???
Michigan-Time for them to put up or shut up! Make or Break season for Goofypook
Notre Dame- The Seniors must carry them early to give the youngsters time to develop
Iowa-Rebuilding with a lot of Pressure on Channell to lead the group
Minnesota- Sim is out Coach tph3 is in. Cupboard was pretty bare.
 
WEST
 
Ohio St- No one does more with Less! Coach lhrr and the Buckeyes are ready
Northwestern- Uncertainty regarding Coach Scottevans AKA Brett Favre possible retirement could take it toll on this team
Penn St. – The sleeper of the group could sneak up and grab the crown
Indiana- The Guards have to produce for the Hoosiers to get back to the Dance
Purdue- Coach McCauley did admirably in recruiting but will need much more to challenge for the title.
Illinois- 7 deep is gonna be a tough Mountain to climb

Purdue Off-Season Wrap Up

Following an unjustifiable National Tournament snub that effectively ended the Boilermaker's season, Purdue had an offseason that saw Terry Kliebert, possibly the best player in the notorious history of the team, go undrafted, a light at the end of the tunnel was provided for fans of the team when the strongest recruiting class during Coach McAuley's tenure was signed.

With only 6 scholarship players returning, the Boilermakers will look for freshman contributions, but not necessarily wins, over the next season.  The star of the class is Ronald Huss, a SF from Ohio.   It's rumored that he's been offered a starting position and McAuley hopes that the more minutes Huss can handle, the more quickly he'll become the all-around star he thinks he can be. 

John Broyles, Alfred Sherry and David Maguire offer three big men with varied skills that can offer McAuley options when adjusting lineups based on matchups.  Maguire can offer a solid rebounding/shot-blocking big man once he grows into his body and looses some of his awkwardness.  Sherry offers glimpses of an inside-out scorer that might be a black hole once he gets the ball in his hands.  Broyles was likely a bit over-ranked as the #20 PF in the country, but he provides a well-rounded big that will eventually be a vital part of the rotation.

Rounding out the class is guard Roger Montgomery.  While what you see is what you get in regards to his dribbling and court vision, he has elite potentials for growth in his speed and defense and will likely be able to contribute 8-10 ppg down the line.

Make no mistake about it, this is going to be a rebuilding year at Purdue.  With two of last year's big three of Kliebert, Ralph Prioleau and Robert Fenley, departed, Fenley is going to try to help a young, but promising squad navigate the treacherous waters of the Big 10.  Fenley may be a matador on defense, but he's very good on and off the ball on offense and will have to carry quite a scoring load this season.  The NT is out of the question for the Boilermakers this year, but if the young squad gels and matures quickly, a PIT berth with valuable post-season experience would not be out of the question.

illini Recruiting Recap

Heading into the offseason the illini lost their two main weapons from a year ago in Fred Earhart and Myron McEady. The tandem combined for fifty percent of the offense, so with five open scholarships Coach Brown had to bring in some top tear talent to make a run again at a National Championship after coming up just short a year ago losing to Oregon, the National Champions, in the Elite Eight. With what most considered a down year of recruits in the Midwest, Coach Brown was able to capitalize on the talent within 250 miles. His main target was Stanley Crawford a shooting guard from Milford, Ohio. Crawford is expected to come in and start immediately for the illini at the point. He has a chance to be a real star and with him running the helm the illini's future looks bright.

With Donald Bush and Nicholas Newman both being seniors the illini frontcourt needed to be addressed. I believe Coach Brown did it in a big way by pulling in two five star recruits in George Gingras and Timothy Corbett, and to round out the class Larry Robbins has signed to play the backup power forward position. All three players will see 10-15 minutes a game and won't be counted on to score but yet just to contribute off the bench. Gingras may be the most interesting player of the three who is listed as a power forward but Coach Brown has plans to move him to the small forward in the future to help maximize his zone with another solid rebounder, who has some serious potential. 

This freshman class really has a chance to make their mark in the illini history books. If Coach Brown can keep these three together for years to come the illini have a chance to do something special and possibly bring home their first National Title in school history. Hopefully, this is just a start to the type of talent that the illini fans will see in years to come to help restore this one time powerhouse.

Spartan Recruiting Recap/Season Prospectus

After a somewhat dissapointing second round finish in the National Tournament, the Spartans are looking to build for the future.  The unexpected loss of Big Ten player of the year and defensive player of the year Dwight Horner to the NBA, combined with the graduation of star PF John Bolton leaves the cagers from East Lansing with some opportunities in the frontcourt.  In the backcourt, the Spartans welcome back Michael Damianio for a fifth year, their leading scorer from last season. 

On the recruiting front, the coaching staff was really looking for a solid big man to play down low to replace the production of Horner and Bolton, but whiffed on a couple of prospects.  Daniel Hinton, the initial darling of the staff chose to stay in his home state of Ohio and sign with national runners-up Ohio State.  Wisconsin center Cody Fossett was lured to Ames, Iowa to play for the Cyclones.  After being rebuffed by their top two targets, the staff hunkered down and widened their search nationally and focused on two promising post players, Lloyd Alberty and Edward Shear.  After getting some promising initial feedback from Mr. Alberty, the staff jumped in with both feet even though the distance to Bedford TX was an obstacle to consider.  Unfortunately, the Spartans could not convince Lloyd to relocate to the chilly midwest as he chose to sign with Oklahoma after a lengthy and expensive battle for his services.  Eventually, the staff offered Dalton Perkins, who was identified on one of the scouting trips to Texas.  Mr. Perkins shows a lot of potential, but lacks the initial skill development of what most would consider requisite for a major conference player and has a questionable work ethic.  It will be interesting to follow Mr. Perkins career to see if he can take advantage of his opportunities and develop into a solid contributor.

On a more positive note, the Spartan coaching staff is pleased to welcome PG George Lang into the fold.  Coming off a Michigan Mr. Basketball senior season in high school, Lang augments a very deep and talented backcourt in East Lansing.  Coach netgymrat will need to ensure that George sees the floor early and often in his freshman season, something that is sure to happen once he learns the basics of the flex offense.  It is hard to imagine Lang suiting up in Spartan green for too long before the NBA beckons him.

As for the upcoming season, the team is going to push the traditional definition of the flex offense - "Doesn't require a big presence inside to be effective, allows the offense to spread the floor and use quickness to penetrate to the basket or draw the defense in for open outside shots." as the team will send out a four guard lineup quite often and have a serious lack of rebounding inside.  Ultimately, the success or failure of this season's squad will rest on the development of last year's #2 ranked recruiting class.  If they can avoid the sophomore jinx, the prospects for contention in the big ten look fairly bright; perhaps bright enough to justify the preseason top 25 votes they received.

Hoosier Recruiting Recap

With only two scholarships to fill this year and a poor crop of recruits in the Midwest, the Hoosiers weren't looking for stars, but were hoping to find guys who could contribute to the program.  Coach Tanzetti and staff identified two guards who fit the criteria of what they needed in Bloomington.  Plagued by the their lack of shooting ability they brought in Antonio Vaughan from St. Louis, Missouri.  Vaughan isn't expected to play a big role this season for the Hoosiers, but may be called upon in some close games to stretch the defense by knocking down some triples.  Known in high school as a sharpshooter, Vaughan will have to improve his defense and handles if he wants to be a regular in the Hoosier rotation.  

With the other schollie, Coach Tanzetti brought in Robert French from Charlevoix, Michigan.  French should provide IU with some decent minutes coming off the bench as the backup two guard to Stanley Madewell.  French was the #100 player in the country and with some solid work in the gym could become a solid scorer later in his career for the Hoosiers.  His ability to adjust to the college game will go a long way in determining whether IU will suffer the same drop off in the backcourt that they did last year when Madewell and Charles Fitzgerald went out of the game.  

Although neither player bring the same amount of hype as others in the conference, they both should be great additions to this Hoosier squad looking to get back to the Big Dance.

Iowa Recruiting Recap

Iowa had three scholarships to fill, but was forced to release a player after he was found to be in a car driving around Des Moines with Adam Robinson.  Unfortunately, it was his second public incident, having been seen spending a copious amount of time with DJK before his recent arrest.  This left four open spots with only enough money to fill three.  Add to that the fact that Iowa has a C+ prestige and almost no current talent, and it's going to be a long road to climb.  The new coach has decided to make a huge change to the program switching from the flex offensive scheme to a motion-based offense, as well as eliminating the full-court press and shifting to a man-to-man approach.  The team will most likely play out this year using the flex and press in an effort to remain at least somewhat competitive, but in the event of a catastrophic season (which is not unlikely), the switch will take place early to assist in the development of the younger players.

For his first recruiting class in the conference, new coach "B-Radical" (player's coach) had his work cut out for him.  Lagging behind the conference in both prestige and talent, he simply needed to get at least a couple of decent players to start the turnaround.  After starting at Mississippi Valley St. with the cupboard bare and taking the team to 6 winning seasons in a row, including 5 20-win seasons and a 30-win season, the Iowa faithful is optimistic about their new leader.  Seeing him finish in the top 20 the last two seasons and then come home to his alma mater, it was a match made in heaven.  The new ball coach knew he needed to get at least two bigs and one guard, so he set out with gusto.  Obviously, with limited resources and prestige, he realized the importance of not straying too far from home.  At guard, he set his sights on Iowa native George Ginther.  While his initial ratings are not terribly impressive, especially for the competitive level of this conference, his already high athleticism and great projections in speed, defense, and passing promises to make him a well-rounded guard after a couple seasons of adjustment to the college game.  After beating out Xavier for Ginther and using a large amount of his available funds, it was time to focus on the big men.
In the paint, coach B-Radical picked up two very different bigs in Anthony Edwards and Maurice Locascio.  Maurice, another homegrown Iowa prospect, projects to be a fantastic defensive big, with already solid ratings and great potential in rebounding, shot blocking, and defense.  He will, unfortunately, not be an offensive threat.  He does, however, have the potential to develop enough speed and ball handling/passing to move over to the #4 so Edwards can start at Center.  Edwards, the only out-of-state recruit the Hawkeyes targeted, projects to be a really good one for Iowa.  The young man from Illinois has the exact potentials any would be looking for and very solid starting ratings.  Iowa is really counting on his development.

Anthony Dunklin was a last-second local recruit whose future at Iowa is uncertain.  He has the potential to turn into a decent player after a few years of development, but his work ethic makes that outcome look doubtful.  The coaching staff will be watching him closely to determine the usefulness of keeping him on scholarship after this season.

While the outlook for this season is grim, if coach B-Radical can pick up a couple more players with the potential of Edwards next season, he might be able to start the slow climb into the B prestige range.  Then he'll be able to start fighting for the recruits necessary to compete in this beast of a conference.

                                          Conference Predictions 

Looking to continue to keep this forum and conference active, I have decided to put out my conference predictions. After the first game of the season the Big Ten has three ranked teams in the top 15 (#5 illinois, #13 OSU and #15 Indiana) and four other teams receiving votes (Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Michigan). The Big Ten seems to be loaded with talent and a lot of upperclassman, so this should be a great year for the conference as a whole and a year where a loss to a mediocre team won't drastically change your RPI like the last two seasons. The Big Ten right now as it stands looks like the 3rd best conference following the ACC and Big 12. With that being said let's get to the predictions.

East

1. Wisconsin- It was really a tough decision between the Badgers and the Spartans for this top spot but it came down to the Badgers having a more experienced team with five seniors and quality Big Men that gave them the slight advantage in my books.

2. Michigan State- The Spartans have a very talented team that could easily take the crown for the best team in the Big Ten, I just don't know how having a lack of Big's will work. If they can rebound with some of the better teams in the conference than netgymrat may just take this team deep into the NCAA tourny.

3. Michigan- The Wolverines are still young and maybe a year away from making some serious noise in the Big Ten but they have quality guards and several solid big men, with a strong showing in the non-conference and a third place finish the Wolverines should be heading back to the Big Dance.

4. Notre Dame- The Irish should finish fourth in the East but their lack of defense will be what hurts this team. Again, this is another young team that is a year or two away from making a push into the top 3.

5. Iowa- Bradfantasy has his work cut out for him to turn this team around, the one nice thing is he's in a state where he's the second best team so he should be able to get some decent talent, but until he gets his players in the system this team will struggle, but he appears to be a good coach after looking at his resume so the future could be bright in Iowa.

6. Minnesota- The Gophers after a year ago going 0-27 had to be placed last, mbalding is a great coach who already won his first game but with the lack of talent and 4 walkons is looking toward the future. Simmy didn't help the Gophers by any means the last few years they have just not recruited anyone worth while, so much like with Iowa the future could be bright in Minnesota it will just take time and patience.  


West

1. Ohio State- The Buckeyes a year ago made a run for the ages to the National Championship and then had basically the whole team return, so they had to be placed in the drivers seat. The Buckeyes have great guards and bigs so this could be a scary team, with another season like the last the Buckeyes will surely have a new look come next season because they loose six seniors and their three juniors could easily go pro in Bojansowki (probably spelled wrong) Roosevelt Rodger and Julius Malone. With that being said OSU will not be a team I would wan to face come tourny time.

2. illinois- The illini look to be strong again after losing to the National Champs a year ago in the Elite Eight, even though they are the top ranked team in the conference I think a second place finish in the West would be promising. The talent in the West I believe is stronger than in the East so we will see if the Big Three in Casey Denney, Frank White and Stanley Crawford can once again take the conference crown.

3. Penn State- The Lions have a stacked team and most years this team could be the top team in the conference but with Ohio State returning everyone and my team being illinois I have to be a little biased but the Lions will be a team in the Big Dance and will be a tough out. Not looking forward to playing this team twice.

4. Indiana- Tanzetti has the 15th ranked team in the country and I have him ranked fourth in the West but hey maybe the Hoosiers will prove me wrong and win the close games they couldn't a season ago. Madewell is a beast and if any one catches him on a night where he goes off the Hoosiers can beat anyone, so this is a team to watch.

5. Purdue- The Boilermakers have a good team much like the Hoosiers I just think that this is a tough year for the teams in the West or to be a member of the Big Ten because of the talent level, but again this could be a team that gets hot and makes a run through the conference tourny. This team will be a bubble team that I think ends up making the PIT.

Northwestern- The Sim has destroyed this team from a National Title contender a few seasons ago to arguably one of the worst teams in the country, if a human doesn't take over this team next season they will end up having 12 players that couldn't play at the d2 level.


Conference Awards

Player of the Year- Roosevelt Rodger of OSU or Michael Damiano of MSU 
Conference Coach of the Year- Goodyr, I think Penn State will be very dangerous
Freshman of the Year- Stanley Crawford (illinois)

Well those are my predictions hopefully no one is too upset but that is just the way I see things working out but with What if you really never know, but this should be an exciting season for the Big Ten so good luck to everyone and let's take the top Conference this season.

Very well Said Brown!!  I think it would be cool if instead of  everyone doing there own predictions, we elect one coach each year to do it all like you did, and react to what your thoughts are!  I think we could keep a solid running discussion!

I like what you said aout the predicitions!!  I think the West is Loaded, and I wouldnt be surprised if any of the first 4 win the conference title!  Myself im leaning slightly towards the illini, and that hurts to say that being that Im a life long Buckeye!!
