Just finishing up a re-read of Bruce Catton's three-volume history of the Army of the Potomac; between volumes two and three, read Iris Chang's The Rape of Nanking.  Not that well written (never was a fan of her style), but an interesting - and disturbing - topic.
it is disturbing. prisoners for bayonet practice

Oblomov (1859) by Ivan Goncharov.  Well-written but slow-moving novel (in the 19th century Russian style) about a nobleman who's going through a mid-life crisis.  Oblomov's lazy and apathetic and doesn't even get out of bed for the first couple hundred pages of the story (it's a nearly 500 page novel).  It starts off as a satire of the Russian gentry, especially those who have been spoiled since birth and as a consequence are utterly useless, yet you wind up feeling the most sympathy for the main character, since he's the most decent person in the book -- a cross between Hamlet and Jeff Bridges' "Dude" -- and really, he's sort of got a point.  Why get out of bed if you don't have to?

Infinite Jest.

David Foster Wallace's masterclass in post-structuralist fiction that is "a gargantuan, mind-altering comedy about the pursuit of happiness in America" and undoubtedly one of the most landscape-shifting novels of the 20th century. Never read it before, though I've read a bunch of his short stories, essays and articles. Very good so far. Definitely recommended.

Last Kind Words Saloon, Larry McMurtry

not a novel, barely a story

probably a screenplay looking for backing

old gunfighters. then reporters. you could watch Bronco Billy instead

i have reconsidered

one measure of a movie book or play is How much do you think about it later, how often does it pop up in your mind

always wanted to read Ball Four, never got around to it. I remember it when it first came out it was touted as a tell all. I'll get to it I'm sure because it covers one of my favorite eras.
me and my friends passed around Ball Four in the 6th grade
