I'm with you on this one.

The New York Review of Books has the most informative "review" I've come across yet of the Mueller report.

Briefer review:

The Cooperstown Casebook by Jay Jaffe

"...he was also a terrible defender whose -195 fielding out-stanks every player except Derek Jeter"

HA!

babip and the three true outcomes

if O=D and D=P+F, O=P+F

BBP+3TO=P+F

jeter played SS. can that man at that position really be a haller

compared to the edgar argument. i shall have a shot and a beer and think it straight through

there are a lot of people who read alternative history novels and think they are non - fiction.

Oh, stop. You would keep Jeter and his 3,465 hits, 544 doubles, 260 homers, 1,923 runs, 1,311 RBI, 358 steals, 14 All-Star selections, 5 World Series rings and 200 hits in 158 postseason games out of the HOF based on his defense? The only real question is whether he gets in unanimously like Rivera (he probably won't). Using your logic of weighting defense equally w/ offense, Nolan Ryan, Mike Piazza, Chipper Jones, Ralph Kiner, Joe Morgan, Willie McCovey, Willie Stargell & Harmon Killebrew are just a few of the players who don't belong in the HOF. Is that what you really believe?

not equally

SS

The more you narrow the criteria, the more it sounds like a "Keep Jeter Out" argument. Certainly you'd have to get rid of Chipper at 3B and Joe Morgan at 2B under those criteria. And if you want to limit your case to SS's, you'd deny a guy who ranks 6th all time in hits and has an amazing record of postseason success in favor of such HOF shortstops as Ozzie Smith, Luis Aparicio, Pee Wee Reese and Scotter Rizzuto? Ozzie was a defensive wizard with few peers and Aparicio, Pee Wee & Scooter were all popular guys but I'd love to see the statistical backup that ranks any one of them ahead of Jeter.

the preeminent defensive position outside of catcher and the dude was a clubfoot cripple

statistically

yes, now that you mention it, keep jeter out

Jeter in his prime, was probably the best player in the game. Yes, he was no Ozzie Smith as SS, but Ozzie wasn’t close to being the player Jeter was. Very few HOF outfielders could match Willie Mays as a fielder, but there were a few on par with him as far as their overall game. Jeter is a shoe-in.

Saying that Jeter was probably the best player in the game is almost as stupid as saying he doesn't belong in the HOF.

You must have wowed them in debate class.

Totally nailed it. Joerat1's reasoning as solid as his Top 25 teams.

Jeter was never close to being the best player in the game. Especially since his career overlapped with A-Rod at the same position. Then you got Bonds, Pujols, Ichiro, Vladdy... Jeet’s thing was consistency and durability
