Now, the Yanks and the Royals are competing for... Omar Infante.
I have always HATED the Yankees. Signing Beltran has taken it to another level. If the Yankees get Infante I am probably going to go crazy. But, I guess it is baseball. ******* salary baseball.

That Jason Vargas signing looks really good right now.

What could possibly make you think that the Astros would trade Altuve???

Just the 2014 Tigers I made for you in lieu of you risking TEN LOUSY DOLLARS to back up your Royals bravado.

yes. if you hadn't signed a pitcher with one season with an era better than league average, you may have been able to get Beltran or possibly Infante.
12/9/2013 7:15 AM
rsp777-Okay, I get it.
masterdebate-We were never going to get Beltran. The Infante race is not over yet. Let's look at Altuve and Lough's stats.

PLAYER PA R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB BB SO AVG OBP SLG
D.Lough 335 35 90 17 4 5 33 5 10 52 .286 .311 .413
J.Altuve 672 64 177 31 2 5 52 35 32 85 .283 .316 .363
With a little time, Lough's stats will be just as good as Altuve's. The Astros have a need in the Outfield that Lough would fill.

With the prices other pitchers have been getting, Scott Feldman gets 3/$30M, Phil Hughes gets 3/$24M, and Nolasco gets 4/$49M, Vargas at 4/$32M doesn't look crazy.  At first I didn't think the deal was all that great, and it's definitely a year longer than I would have preferred.  I'd proably rather have seen them allocate resources a bit different, but can't really hate it with the way things are looking.  They needed innings, and Vargas should give them innings.  Then they have to hope at least two of Duffy/Ventura/Zimmer/Manaea step up as front of the rotation guys, which is the only way they be able to compete long term anyway.

Jonas:
Vargas went first. The others are a reaction to him. The innings Vargas gives are not desirable innings for a team looking to contend this year. His upside isn't even that high. Giving the young kids a chance to pitch and spending the money on a quality 2b would provide far greater returns.

Jlrunruh:
I was hearing, before Vargas, that the Royals were rumored to go 3/45 for Beltran, same as New York. After Vargas, all I heard was 2/30. (Mostly from Inside Pitch and First Pitch on XM89)

What 2B should they spend money on?  I agree they need a 2B.  But I don't think throwing money at an aging Infante is the right move.  If the Angels wanted to move Kendrick, I still think they could fit that in the payroll, but if they trade Duffy/Ventura to get him then they still have to sign another SP most likely.

And I don't think those signings are a reaction to Vargas as much as a that teams are flush with cash.  Had Vargas not gone first, I think he would have gotten more money.

Infante is 32. A three year deal takes him just past his peak. He's a plus defender and a decent hitter, a definite improvement on Getz et al anyways.
12/9/2013 5:05 PM
A pile of wet turds is an improvement over Getz.
