No, it doesn't surprise me. People tend to forget the details over time and move on to other things to be outraged about. I'll give you an example. Vernon Davis was interviewed by SI a few weeks ago for an article. They were speaking of his troubled childhood/poor enviroment. He mentioned that he got into a little trouble for minor things like "stealing dogs". Now I don't expect him to be all that bright. But you'd think the editors would say "Oh, rough enviroment, stealing dogs, wonder what was happening to these stolen dogs?" and edit it out. I'm not a "write a letter to the editor" sort of person but I had to explain to them how stupid they were for printing that. Needless to say, Vernon Davis can't break a leg too soon.
