6 starts doesn't make an all-star appearance. Not when the rest are pitching more than double that. He's hasn't even pitched enough to be on a leader board.
One question should be asking if he can contribute more to his team in 7 starts than an all star type pitcher can in 15 or 16. Or can he contribute more (or even come close) in 7 starts than a closer can in their limited innings? If so and he does do just that then it wouldn't be too hard to include him what with the hype and excitement that would surround him.
Far-fetched example but if he pitched 25 more scoreless innings with 40 K's, 2 no-hitters with one being a perfect game
then could we include him?
In no way am I saying he will do that, just that there may be a point where he may have to be included.
More likely scenario is that he pitches pretty well in his remaining starts and does not deserve to be in the game on merit (as determined by total value added to the team) alone.
In this case I think I would like to see him included. You would have a pretty nice setup for a very memorable all-star game. He could come in for an inning or 2 and if he struck out 3 out of 3 guys or 6 out of 6 the hype machine would grow to even higher levels. Even a long home run by someone like Alex Rodriguez would have been an exciting power versus power matchup.
