I understand them doing it because of the helmet-to-helmet hits, especially since all the data coming out about concussion effects on players well after their NFL careers end.

In fact, within 5 years I expect Steve Young to begin to show early signs of dementia. 
Get rid of the facemasks and we'll start to see the helmet-to-helmet hits decrease.
