Pitching staff setup (complicated) Topic

This is my staff for the "build your own progressive" league, so it's a team that started out as the '27 As, progressed a year and added some talent. It's a fairly high-cap league and probably plays like something between a 120-140mil league in terms of offense. Obviously with it being 1928, the raw numbers are ugly and the normalized numbers look a lot better. And my offense is pretty solid, though they don't bring great gloves with them.

The biggest issues are that 2 of my best high-IP pitchers have low IP/G numbers. I could put them in a tandem but then I'd have no bullpen. Innings are certainly not a problem (we have about 2500) and we play in PNC Park so the HRs won't be quite as bad. Here's who I have:

Burleigh Grimes 353ip 1.17whip 0.30/167hr .239oav# 2.14bb# 6.89ip/g 2.68erc#
Lefty Grove 278ip 1.12whip 0/34/115hr .224oav# 2.24bb# 6.71ip/g 2.42erc#
Garland Braxton 230ip 1.01whip 0.29/137hr .216oav# 1.85bb# 5.75ip/g 2.01erc#
Jack Quinn 224ip 1.29whip 0.13/310hr .281oav# 1.48bb# 6.82ip/g 3.38erc#
Sam Gray 277ip 1.30whip 0.38/105hr .254oav# 3.00bb# 7.50ip/g 3.28erc#
Watty Clark 207ip 1.25whip 0.18/270hr .249oav# 2.36bb# 4.87ip/g 2.81erc#
Eddie Rommel 184ip 1.17whip 0.57/69hr .260oav# 1.37bb# 4.40ip/g 3.03erc#
Red Lucas 179ip 1.23whip 0.48/103hr .249oav# 2.30bb# 6.20ip/g 3.01erc#
Howard Ehmke 148ip 1.28whip 0.39/102hr .249oav# 2.89bb# 6.06ip/g 3.26erc#

I've also got these guys but I don't think their roles are in doubt:

Rube Walberg 250ip 1.27whip 0.73/55hr .260oav# 2.49bb# 6.20ip/g 3.50erc# (I don't think there's much doubt he'll be at Long B)
Hal Haid 50ip 1.06whip 0.19/261hr .208oav# 2.15bb# 1.74ip/g 1.95erc# (I don't think there's much doubt he'll be the closer)

Later today I'll post what I'm planning to do. I think it makes some sense but I'm open to ideas.

I'd have a rotation of Grimes (set to 105 pitches), Grove/Clark tandem (80/60), Braxton/Lucas tandem (70/55).  That way you make sure to maximize the innings of your 5 best non-closers.  Grove/Clark probably gets you to your closer most games, and Braxton/Lucas gets you to your Setup A (Rommel) or Setup B (Ehmke), and Quinn and Gray are Long A who would mostly see action when Grimes pitches or in blowouts or extra innings.

I dont see a problem starting them just use a lower pitch count you have plenty of innings in your bullpen. but since they are among your best pitchers I'd put one of them at Setup. periodically switch them around to get enough innings out of them.

I'd say run Grimes, Grove, Braxton, and Clark in a 4 man with lower pitch counts for the last two and with both of them available in relief to maximize their IP and appearances.

I like barracuda's idea of the 3 tandems. If that worked and i got 8 innings a game out of all 3 that would be awesome. My concern is that it's only 1250 innings and it is a fairly high cap league, so I'd be worried that Rommell would blow too many leads. But it might be a better plan than mine.

I was going to run Grimes as #1, Grove as #2 and a Braxton/Lucas tandem at #3. That would leave Clark free to be the setup guy and pitch the 7th/8th. If Grimes starts about 60-62 games and Grove about 50, it could work.
