A 1bman, 120m league, with no player restrictions, home field, Astrodome.
28 good plays, 0 poor plays, 1 error.
   .292, .351, .384
   34 doubles, 2 triples, 7 HRs, 98 RBIs
   $7m salary.
Do you think he was worth the money?

assuming you spent half on pitching/hitting and there was no DH.  That means for 8 hitting slots an average salary of around 7.4 million.  So this guy was under the average and hit .292 in a -1 singles park.  He knocked in 98 runs so you probably batted him 5th ish...

I'll say yes.

You could have taken '94 Doyle and gotten similar overall performance for $2.5M less.

I would say probably not really.  Always hard to say.  I usually prefer to go straight hitting at 1B the higher caps.  The added offensive efficiency of a big bat in the $7-$9 million range could way beyond make up for the 28 good plays which may have saved you a total of 10-15 runs, perhaps a few more.

28 + plays at 1B at around 0.83 runs per play (see this link for details)
That gives you about 23.2 runs saved with his defense.

Using a very basic estimate RC = OBP * TB or OBP * SLG * AB and assuming he got about 650 AB, that would give him 87 runs created on offense. That seems like a ridiculously high estimate, but OK. That gives him about 110 runs created/saved in total. Assuming you spent $60mil on offense then he cost you 11% of your offensive budget. So as long as your team scored less than 1000 runs then he was worth it. (1000 runs total * 11% = 110 runs created).

I don't know that I buy that RC estimate but if it's right, then yes you probably got your money's worth.

I actually spent 65m on pitching, and he played in all 162 games. The team won 95 games, and its' division, and is up 2-1 in the first round of the playoffs as we speak. I would have liked to see a bit more "O" from him, but he didn't disappoint. I was on the fence as far as using him again for the next season of the same league.

I say no way, get a bopper.
griz, I wish i knew how you do it, because when I draft HRs, even id the guys hit 'em, my team disappoints. I have taken '20 Ruth, '23 Williams, 1914 Cravath, et al., and they do well, but I just can't get the hang of the pitching to go along with them. Playing in -4 parks I usually do well. Playing in +parks, I don't fare as well.

Out of curiosity, what does WIS list as his RC total? It should be listed under your team's extended hitting stats.

The numbers aren't great but in the Astrodome against 120mil cap type pitching, you can't really complain. In the deadball era those numbers would make him an MVP candidate.

84.74 RC. I certainly was not disappointed...I wish all my 7m dollar choices would do as well!!!!
