Can anyone help me understand (and manage accordingly) why two of my players are way or trending above their historical stats on errors?  If it is something I am doing, I want to stop or correct it.  Here is the detail:

My shortstop (Michael Young) in real life had 11 errors in 151 games at SS.  So far in SIM, he has 13 errors in 73 games.  One of my OF (Johnny Callison) has  6 errors so far (70 games) when he made 7 in 152 in 1962.

Both have never dipped below 100% in their usage.

Thanks for the insight.

DO you have deadball pitchers?   A pitcher's season is factored into a fielders chance of fielding cleanly somehow.   If you have a pitcher from 1903 pitching  your fielders will field like it is 1903 (or at least more like 1903 than there actual year).

Any pitcher who played further back than the year M. Young played will drag down his fielding. THe further back you go, the more his fielding goes down.

Two starters --Young (1895) and McGinnity (1902)...makes sense.  Not much I can do to offset this, is there?

I did not know this. I always thought the new ara fielders were better to have playing when a dead ball pitcher is playing, because they allow more ground balls.  When a new era pitcher is pitching you can have weaker fielders in the game. Both of these thoughts the one mentioned by trentonjoe and what I said can still be true at the same time.  Mikew must have all deadball guys going. In the league I'm in now I like atleast one new era pitcher so I can play the game with the things we mentioned in mind.

What I do not understand is how one team in my league that has Howard Johnson at SS (1989-with 24 actual errors) who has no errors so far this year and has a staff of Addie Joss, Pete Alexander and Doc White....

Isn't '89 the year HoJo had a 100% FP at SS? I kinda think his RL errors might have been at 3B, his primary position...

I remember using him at SS once before the last update...no errors, but boy did he ever make a lot of (-) plays...

1971 Thurman Munson (A+/B/A+) had 1 error in real life.  With 11 games remaining in a current league, Munson has been charged with 9 errors.  He has never played at less than 100%.  My starting rotation is Maddux, PMartinez, Pettitte, Reuss, and Hughson.  Hughson is the only pitcher whose season is earlier than 1980.  (And Munson is batting .189/.258/.258.)

Please explain that performance!  (Coin toss came up "tails" 90% of the time after "Eleventy Million" throws.)

My favorite thing to try is to grab a bunch of deadball hitters (pre 1900) with A or B fielding ratings (if you can find them) and use modern day pitchers.  Their errors are way below their real life totals.  Plus, when they are batting, they play a small part into your opponents' errors.

I bumped a thread I posted about this.

I think these rare occurences is what makes the game fun, you never know what can happen as in real ball.

Ditto - his (-) plays are astronomical, I think far offsetting his near-perfect fielding.  I'll use him (rarely) when a theme's limits make him the best choice, but it's not a happy selection usually.
