So I just had an exchange with another owner.   It wasn't my intention but I think he thought I was low balling him.  I kinda pride myself on being an active (and fair) trader.   Was this offer ridiculous?

  We are a little more through the 1992 season in a 24 team single season progressive.

My 1st rounder (likely to be in the 16-20 range) for Ryne Sandberg.

I think that's a VERY fair offer; if anything, a mid-1st-round pick is likely worth a lot more than Sandberg, though that depends on (a) quality of '93 draft, obviously and (b) whether he thinks he can make the playoffs this year.

I certainly don't think your offer was unreasonable at all.

I'm going to agree with contrarian here, That seems like a fair deal unless Sandberg is a huge part of his playoff plans for the current season, in which case, that's an easy rebuttal: "Sandberg's important to my playoff hopes this season...."

I would agree... that offer was more than fair.

You guys are in the same division, you are 9 games ahead of him with the only realistic chance of a wild card at stake being that you both are quite aways back from the division leader. Losing sandberg from his team means nothing this year whereas it could propel you into the hunt for a playoff spot and maybe even the division. Certainly not a low ball proposition. He is too far out of it for it to matter.

I hear that...I just wanted to make sure I wasn't losing my touch.

Seems fair to me.  I've got a spreadsheet with total salaries for rookies from 1993.  Going down that list, here are the 16th-20th players:

 $               40,917,031 Reynolds, Shane 1
 $               39,811,291 Easley, Damion 5
 $               37,238,528 Valentin, John 6
 $               36,108,583 Sanchez, Rey 6
 $               33,092,171 Curtis, Chad 7

wow, that's an ugly draft class.

That's the 1992 class.

But ya, you slightly overpaid for Ryne.  I would say he+a 2nd rounder for a 1st.
