Haren is worth $7.1M in 2010 for his 235 IP, or just over $30,000 per IP, despite an ERC+ of just 104. He is in the range with other 2010 pitchers whose ERC+ are 150 and higher. So why is he so expensive? Is it his A/A+ F/R?

Among his peripherals, he's average in ERA, OAV, WHIP, below average in HR/9, above average in K/9 and his only elite category is BB/9.

Any insights?

he is one hell of a hitter

of course, why was that not my first guess?

that was my first guess too. He had a great hitting season with 57 PAs, 20 hits, a .364/.375/.527 line totalling .901 OPS. his OPS+ is 137 and he only struck out 9 times. To give this some context, the only 2010 players with a higher OPS+ are fellows like Pujols, Bautista, Hamilton, Votto, Cabrera, and Morneau. I'm sure his fielding has something to do with his price too, but all in all, you're paying a lot for the Big Wood.

In an open league, where PAs cost a lot, but pitchers PAs are "free" (at least in the fatigue sense)... that probably bats 5 or 6 on most teams... might be worth it.

agreed, and depending on the park, I might even slot him at #4.

it was actually for a unique progressive league, Progressive Eliminator, where every year from 2002 to 2009 you drop 2 teams (worst overall record) and then the "Champion" is the WS Winner in 2010. So as you can see, 2010 is very important and I had a choice between Haren, Carpenter, Peavy, and Webb. I was wondering why Haren came up at the top of the 2010 $/IP when his pitching numbers looked so pedestrian.

for those interested, i went with Haren, partly since I can see he does have value in 2010 outside of pitching, but also due to his strong years from 2005 to 2009.

The league-wide DH in 2010 kind of kills any value from his bat. Still a heck of a fielder though!

Will sure be nice in the playoffs, though.
