Draft help......please??? NEW UPDATE!!! Topic

I don't normally ask these types of questions, but I am truly stumped and running out of time to get a roster built, so I thought I would throw out my options at one position to see how others might think!

Debate is over 1B in a league where ALL games are played at Coors against less than stellar pitchers.  (All pitchers must have OAV of .230+ and HR/9 of 0.50+).  I won't go into all of the limitations placed on draft eligibility.  I basically have three choices from which to choose:

A)  1922 George Sisler  #'s  .406/.456/.586
B)  1961 Norm Cash             .365/.486/.656    41 HR's   6 HR/100#
C)  1938 Hank Greenberg    .305/.422/.669   58 HR's   10 HR/100#

The way I see them is Sisler has the BIG BA....lots of balls in play at Coors.  Greenberg is the HR masher, but will the low average offset the power.  Cash is the happy medium, combining a much better average than Greenberg with the power that Sisler lacks.

I would truly appreciate anyone sharing some constructive thoughts or debates among my choices.  Thank you!

Greenberg...the masher. Looks like this league will be decided on HR's.

I would take Sisler...Greenberg walks to much.   Walks don't win at Coors.

Cash. Enough pop to win, enough average to not suck.

I'd go Mr.Norm Cash.

Sisler is better than that, he's a .420 hitter. I did something weird I drafted  Sisler and bat him leadoff against Righties, good place for a low power high average guy in  that league.
Cash looks good on paper but I've been disappointed by his results, and judging by Performance History so have other people.
Greenberg doesnt hit enough in my opinion. 0.50 HR/9 isnt a huge handicap and when you're scoring 12 runs a game then multiple hits beat a few HR and some outs.
There are other good choices, including Outfielders who have a secondary rating at 1B.

nice.......

six votes in, and we still have a three way tie with each player getting the nod from two of you?!?!?

...so maybe it doesnt make much difference. flip a coin.

I vote Sisler to break the tie. Two reasons:

1) The league prohibited OAV and HR/9, but didn't mention BB/9. So the obvious draft for everyone is to take the guy with the fewest BB/9 and walks will be surpressed league-wide. Sisler hits more singles and draws fewer walks than the other two, so the BB/9 won't affect him as much

2) The speed factor. Just because Coors is a HR haven, don't forget that it also has crazy XBH numbers. Sisler's ability to advance along the basepath could add up to quite a few more runs over the course of a season. He's a great leadoff or two hole option, and I'm sure your roster has tons of guys to fill the 3-4-5 holes.

I was basically already there!  The arguments I have seen and heard here are the same ones that have been running through my head anyway!

although, teal_leo's post makes a convincing arguement.

There's one additional strategy factor to consider. Because of the pitching requirements, it's likely tht many owners in the league will choose the same pitchers (the guys who just barely qualify for OAV of .230+ and HR/9 of 0.50+).  During your roster build, did you notice a pattern in regards to lefties v. righties? Take a look at your own roster. Are the majority of pitchers right handed? If so I'd build my hitters heavy on the lefties. This could maybe help you narrow your choice down.

How about '20 Sisler instead of '22?  .394 AVG#, 7 2B/100#, 2 3B/100# and 4 HR/100# to take advantage of all the XBH available in Coors and 89 speed to cruise around the bases, for only 200k more.

nice idea skunk.....but I didn't list all of the limitations for hitters beyond the list I provided.....and one of them was only player seasons between 1921-1972!

So close...I figured those two season would be similar enough that '20 would fit the restrictions, too.  Oh well...

My choice between those three would be Sisler, but that's because he fits my style of play better.
