Walkoff ground rule double - scoring error? Topic

Just happened in a game here of mine.

Bottom 9th, score tied at 7, bases loaded. Batter hits a ground rule double, ending the game.

How many runs score? Is the final score 8-7, or 9-7?

The final score here was posted as 8-7 and just wondering...?

It's 8-7.  But the batter should only be credited with a single.

If he hits a home run it's a different story; all the runs count and he gets credit for the HR.

I don't know about the single or double part, but he definitely only gets one RBI... as soon as the run scores, GAME OVER. The only exception to that is a walkoff HR, when all the runs count.

Thanks. In this instance, the final score was registered as 8-7 but the batter was credited with a double in the boxscore. This seems inconsistent to me; and I guess the error is in the crediting of the double, not the final score, right?

Official MLB rules can be accessed here:

mlb.mlb.com/mlb/downloads/y2010/official_rules/2010_OfficialBaseballRules.pdf

Rules 10.06 (f) and 10.06 (g) cover this situation explicitly:

(f) Subject to the provisions of Rule 10.06(g), when a batter ends a game with a safe hit that drives in as many runs as are necessary to put his team in the lead, the official scorer shall credit such batter with only as many bases on his hit as are advanced by the runner who scores the winning run, and then only if the batter runs out his hit for as many bases as are advanced by the runner who scores the winning run.

Rule 10.06(f) Comment: The official scorer shall apply this rule even when the batter is theoretically entitled to more bases because of being awarded an “automatic” extra-base hit under various provisions of Rules 6.09 and 7.05. The official scorer shall credit the batter with a base touched in the natural course of play, even if the winning run has scored moments before on the same play. For example, the score is tied in the bottom of the ninth inning with a runner on second base and the batter hits a ball to the outfield that falls for a base hit. The runner scores after the batter has touched first base and continued on to second base but shortly before the batter-runner reaches second base. If the batter-runner reaches second base, the official scorer shall credit the batter with a two-base hit.

(g) When the batter ends a game with a home run hit out of the playing field, the batter and any runners on base are entitled to score.

The batter is credited with a single and one RBI, final score 8-7.  Rule 10.06(f) concerns a ball that is still in "play". A ground rule double is what it is because the ball is no longer in "play". We've all seen situations where the bases are loaded, batter hits a ground rule double, the runner on first must stop at third, and we say "If only the ball had stayed in the park everyone might have scored".

Yes, but the comment under 10.06(f) specifically covers the ground rule situation.  We agree on the outcome: single, one rbi, 8-7.

There are instances where the batter could be credited with a two base hit under 10.06(f), but a ground rule double would not be scored as a double in this scenario.
