Catcher out of position help!!! Topic

HELP!!!
I screwed up and only drafted 530 PA for my catcher!!!
I'll bat him 9th so I figure I'll need around 50-80 PA from a sub.
Anyone ever played a SS or OF at catcher? how did it go??

awful....just play him fatigued....

I played Lance Johnson (A/A in the OF) there and he allowed about 3 sb's and 2 passed balls a game.

I've used the '53 Ted Williams to catch in high-cap leagues when King Kelly needed a rest.  He's never had a horrible game and cost me a win, so I'd do it again if I need to.  The big problems will be passed balls and speed teams running wild, as TJ experienced.

I am just finishing up a league [the Two Man Band] where you had to play a single offensive player at all 8 positions.  The only two players who were rated at catcher were Jimmie Foxx and Craig Biggio ... the other 22 teams played guys out of position, everyone from Barry Bonds and Ted Williams to A Rod and Ernie Banks.  Most of them were brutal on passed balls and stolen bases.  The team with Billy Hamilton stole 2,000 bases and won 110 games.

I remember when thejuice6 ran the similar Greatest Hitter League. (Every team chose one hitter and cloned him 13 times, using identical 12-man pitching staffs) Foxx and Torre were the only rated catchers, and Rickey Henderson won an insane number of games, ending up losing to Foxx in the World Series.

I guess I'm missing something.  You only have one catcher on your team?  No reserve?  No AAA catcher you can bring up?

1 catcher no reserve no aaa

You have to figure that most of the season he'll be at 95%, which will give you 600+ PA with him.  Also have him rest when you are taking a beating, you'll save 10-15 PA that way.

To those who've played non-catchers at catcher, do you think you'd be better off playing a good defensive player (A/A SS) or a bad defensive player (since you'll allow lots of SB and PB anyways)?

I've never found that it matters who goes back there. If I have to stick an OOP, I put the worst defensive player there. (If I'm putting an OF at C, for instance, it'll be the 4th-best defensive OF out of the 4 starting OFs.)

First, I can't imagine someone only drafting one catcher who has only 530 PAs.  But what I really can't understand is why don't you have a AAA catcher when EVERYONE gets one in OLs?  And if you really need a backup, just cut someone or make another owner an offer he can't refuse for his AAA catcher.

This is clearly someone who has never played Ted Williams at catcher.  Final tally was 74 CS on 905 attempts, an 8% rate.  Also, 692 passed balls and 115 errors.

Nope, that's about what I expect. But I've not found that it makes much difference whether I put an A/A or a D/D back there. Might as well put out the best OF I can.
