1997 Baltimore Orioles over 1979 California Angels
Four games to one
MVP: Rafael Palmeiro (.353, 1 HR, 4 RBI)

The 97 Orioles almost won 100 games during their season and proved they are much deeper and better team then people may have remembered. Baltimore were much better all series then the Angels and if it wasn’t for a good performance by Nolan Ryan in game four, this would have been an easy sweep for them.

Balance across the board for the birds as they batted .282 as a team and kept their ERA under three at 2.97. Armando Benitez did a fine job out of the pen as a set up man striking out seven and not allowing a single run while Randy Myers had two saves in the series. For the Angles the only note to speak of was Nolan Ryan, who in his two starts struck out an impressive 23 men.

1988 New York Mets over 1926 Cleveland Indians
Four games to three
MVP: Ron Darling (2-0, 1.59 ERA, 9 K)

A series that came down to the wire in every sense as the Mets were on the brink of elimination. They called upon their big arms to save them. New York was down three games to two coming back home and Dwight Gooden followed by Ron Darling both threw complete game victories at Shea, the confidence of this Mets team is obvious.

The Indians battled hard and did it their way without hitting a single home run in the series. Their game three win in extra innings seemed to give the Indians the confidence they needed in the series, but in game six and seven Mets pitching dominated and the games wernt even close, the Indians were outscored 13-2.

1972 Pittsburgh Pirates over 1931 NY Giants
Four games to two
MVP: Roberto Clemente (.440, 1 HR, 9 RBI)

With the series quite even and tied at two games a piece the Pittsburgh Pirates won two in a row to do away with the Giants. In game 5 at the Polo Grounds Dock Ellis and the Pittsburgh bullpen threw a shutout while the clincher in Pittsburgh was headed by Bob Moose who had a fine series with two wins and an ERA at 1.56. Al Oliver was the hero in game one homering twice but didn’t do much the rest of the way while the great Roberto Clemente was all everyone expected of him both at the bat and in the field to take MVP honors.

Carl Hubbell lost twice for the Giants who didn’t get a good series from Mel Ott (.208) as well, still the team batted .311 of Pirate pitching. The Giants lost all three of their games on the turf in Three Rivers and didn’t look comfortable playing in front of the load and loaded Pittsburgh crowd.

1983 LA Dodgers over 2005 Anaheim Angels
Four games to two
MVP: Jerry Ruess (2-0, 1.00 ERA, 5 K, 3 BB)

The battle of Los Angeles didn’t have a Hollywood ending but the series did go six games with the more traditional Dodgers winning. It was pitching that decided this series and when one thinks of pitching its all about the Dodgers. Jerry Ruess and Fernando Valenzuela combined for three of the four wins and allowed only five earned runs in 34 innings. The bullpen was also strong and all in all the Dodger ERA was 2.90.

The Angels did also get good performances as Bartolo Colon allowed only one run in 14 innings but the rest of their Hollywood stars didn’t come to the party. Vlad Guerrero and Garrett Anderson combined for a .173 average while Darren Erstad went hitless for the series. So Tommy Lasorda beats his former player in Mike Scioscia but both men will be heard from again in this tournament. The Angels so far are 0-2 in their series.

1976 Philadelphia Phillies over 2008 Chicago Cubs
Four games to three
MVP: Jay Johnston (.357, 1 HR, 11 RBI)

This series had it all and went down to the wire but in the final game at Veterans Stadium it was the Phillies that broke out against the Cubs bullpen late to win the game. The Cubs bullpen was just terrible all series and cost the Cubs at least two wins; for example Bob Howry and Michael Wuertz combined to allow 18 runs in 4.2 innings of work. Pitching as a whole for the series was missing as even aces like Steve Carlton had an ERA of 6.00 and both teams had issues getting people out. The only stand out start came in game three at Wrigley Field where Jim Londborg pitched six shutout innings and the Phils shutout the Cubs 7-0.

The batting heroes were many. Larry Bowa in 36 at bats batted .500 and stole four bases while playing excellent defense; Bowa was supurb at the top of the lineup. Even pinch hitters were on display as Ollie Brown went 4-5 off the bench and Jim Edmonds hit two home runs. Probably the most excitement in a series we have seen yet.

This is great, and no doubt involves a lot of time. Thanks for the effort.

This may have been mentioned previously, but I'm curious as to how the lineups for each team are produced...?

This is great, and no doubt involves a lot of time. Thanks for the effort.

This may have been mentioned previously, but I'm curious as to how the lineups for each team are produced...?
Lineups are produced by the Whatifsports engine in the SimMatchup section. I only make obvious changes but usually leave it as the developers had it.

Glad you enjoy it.

1981 Oakland Athletics over 1915 Chicago Whales
Four games to two
MVP: Art Wilson (.476, 5 HR, 9 RBI)

The Federal League did its best to run with Billy Martin and his Athletics and did try and make a series of it after losing the first three games. The Athletics led by Rickey Henderson with 6 stolen bases including three in the clinching game 6 as well as Tony Armas who drove in 10 runs were the big difference makers.

The MVP award had to be given out to the losing side who had some amazing performances. Art Wilson smacked five home runs and at times was a one man wrecking machine. Also in game five the ageless Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown pitched a masterpiece taking a no hitter into the 9th inning at Wrigely Field before Mike Heath broke it up with a single to left. Brown faced 28 men and put out a dominant performance. Despite this however it was the Athletics who were the better overall team and have a good core of players that can make things tough on anyone.

1987 San Francisco Giants over 1936 Chicago Cubs
Four games to two
MVP: Will Clark (.692, 18 Hits, 5 RBI, 1 SB)

The Cubs continue to struggle as their 1936 team runs into the big bats of the Giants who batted .327 for the series and made dramatic comebacks in two of their wins. Behind the red hot hitting was the incredible Will Clark. It is hard to understate the series Clark had both with the glove and the bat, the lefty first baseman had 18 hits and just couldn’t be retired. Clark had games of 5-5 and 4-5 and had a series that is sure not to be matched again. Along with Clark Robbie Thompson hit .370 and Kevin Mitchell hit two home runs.

The Cubs were up 2 games to one but would lose four straight. In games five and six they had big leads in which the Giants fought back from in the late innings, Cubs reliever Clay Bryant was the pitcher abused on both occasions. In the final game the Cubs had leads of 4-0 and a lead of 7-4 in the 8th inning before San Fran scored four runs to take the game and the series. Stan Hack did have a solid series for the losing side (.370, 11 RBI).

2006 Minnesota Twins over 1940 Cleveland Indians
Four games to two
MVP: Johan Santana (2-0, 2.12 ERA, 16 K)

A Justin Morneau grand slam in game six capped a comeback at the Metrodome as the Twins ran off three straight wins to take the series in six. Johan Santana won both times he took the mound beating Bob Feller and in the process made the Indians look bad with 16 strike outs. The Twins had a number of hitting stars and are so well coached and on top of their game that sometimes they make winning a true formula. Luis Castillo batted .407 at the top of the lineup while stealing two bases.

Catcher Joe Mauer although still very young showed his brashness at the plate with two home runs and nine driven in for the series. The Twins overall only hit three home runs in the series but still whacked the ball for 37 runs. The Indians didn’t play particularly well at home and won only once on the turf in the dome, they actually outhit the Twins with a .279 average in the series but still came up short.
