We desire the features of the game to be measurable, predictable, and become uncomfortable when they aren't. There are plenty of real life examples of players playing at much less than their peak and doing heroically. Think Kirk Gibson, eg. The fact that the fatigue model in our game is unpredictable is one of the more realistic facets of the game.
