Two days after her husband was accused of pointing a gun at her head, Linda Everett asked a judge today to release former major league outfielder Carl Everett on bail.
"If you release him, it would be in the best interest," she told Hillsborough Circuit Judge Walter Heinrich.
Heinrich complied, setting Everett's bail at $5,000 on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and witness tampering. But he ordered the Tampa native not to have "violent contact" with his wife of 18 years, with whom he has three children.
Everett, who spent 14 seasons in the major leagues and hit 202 home runs, has problems with alcohol and is suffering from depression over the end of his career, his attorney said.
"Not to make excuses, but Mr. Everett is going through alcohol issues coming out of professional baseball," lawyer Grady Irvin Jr. told Heinrich. "He needs counseling, without doubt, and we have a plan to get him help."
Linda Everett said it was important for her husband to get out of jail because "we have three children, and totally, Carl has six kids – five here and a young kid in Dallas. He needs help to be a father to his children."
The couple have separate residences and, as part of his bail, Carl Everett must turn over the keys and garage door opener to his wife's house.
Everett, 39, of 4729 Rue Bordeaux in Lutz, was arrested at his home shortly after 10 p.m. Monday, records show.
During an argument, Everett pointed a silver handgun at his wife's head and then pressed it against the side of her head, a sheriff's office report states. When his wife tried calling 911, he broke the phone.
Everett did the same thing when his wife tried calling 911 from another phone, the report states.
Everett, who attended Hillsborough High School, broke into the major leagues with the Florida Marlins and also had stints with the New York Mets, Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox and Montreal Expos before retiring with the Seattle Mariners after the 2006 season.
